okay maybe in major towns - but as long as one district one factory - is private sector driven - no problem. I don't think they will be sustainable because your need economies of scale/location/consolidations for industrialization to work. But what we need are huge industrial parks in major towns - at least for import substitutions - a lot of chinese trinkets that we import - can be manufactured here in Africa. We need to copy german model - train millions of kids in vocational skills - then open industries - otherwise we will have Nigeria kind of problem where population is a curse not a blessing. I will checkout the dawa industrial parks. vaxx2: |

Yes if they can resolve their ethnic strife - they can go places. You can imagine they are yet to open so many sectors for private investments - like banking/finance/insurance/telcoms - it's a mini-china. Once they liberalize the economy - they will be able to double their gdp - Just30: |

vaxx2:I don't agree with you but I think it is better if the Industries are spread out. Let me give you a good example if you take volta area it is well known for rice so they're right Industries rice processing can be in Volta. It to take cocoa it is in the Southern part of Ghana and that is where a lot of chocolate Industries can be located. If you take soya beans it is in the central and northern part of Ghana that's where a lot of cooking oil Industries can be situated. It is not good putting all your industry in one place because the transport from the farms or from the raw materials to the city or where the Industries are will be too costly it is better to put the Industries as close to the raw materials as possible to cut down on transport |

Yes - of course both raw materials and market are two main consideration - if something is heavy & perishable - then process at sources - otherwise it may be cheaper to process near the market(cities) - but look at this - there is so much one rice mill can do in a district - they are not SCALABE. Within an industrial park - say you food processing park - where all raw rice or beans or maize will brought for processing - - folks selling packaging materials will set up there - all labour will be there --gov can focus on providing reliable & cheap power there --all retailers & wholesalers will prefer picking some rice, beans, vegetable oil --from the park ---rather than going 100kms to volta and the turning around 100kms to say Accra to pick something else-- you start reaping ECONOMIES OF SCALE. The 1D1F may see 1D1F for decades....chance of scaling this is remote. Distributing factories to every district is more political than economical. SUFFERInSMILIIN: |

Look like a private industrial park that just about started, This is not what I am talking about. I mean we need Gov funded Industrial parks - because gov has the muscle to provide infrastructure and incentives to attract manufactures. vaxx2: |

Mkenya2019:Yes, it is fully private company. but fully run by Ghana locally owned company and as well as other private one to be roll in kumasi and others...The kumasi one happens to be the biggest of them all. Actually as a hater of capitalist system myself, i actually don't support private driven investment but it seems Ghana focus on UK model (mixed economy).that is by the way an avenue for goverment to spend less while creating bigger investment. My interest is, the company rolling out the project is a Ghanaian local company. |

Mkenya2019:Have you read Ghana investment promotion Council on the 1d1f it is mostly targeted at food processing and also goods which are 100% made in Ghana it is always better to put the factory as close to the raw material as possible. From a business point of view what the Ghanaian government is doing about putting rice factories in Volta is a brilliant agricultural economy call strategy. with all agricultural products they are perishables and they need to be processed very fast. So you put the rice meals as close to the Farmers as possible. Do you need to know rice is grown in swamp areas if they are not harvested in time and taken to a processing Mill near them the rice we have problems when trying to process it. Is ferocious and non-ferrous metals you can put those as close to the capital city as possible but for all agricultural produce it is better you put them as close to the farms as possible so that the Farmers do not spend a lot of money taking their goods for processing. Just look at the sugarcane plant which was put up in the swarms of South Ghana it is now reaping the benefits. White sugar did not take off those days in Ghana is because the sugar means what 200km from the farms and the Farmers did not want to pay a lot of money on transport taking their goods for processing |

Mkenya2019:True,but there's no way in hell you'll pay Kenyans even 4x that figure. 26$ A MONTH!? SRSLY,TO EVEN CONSIDER THAT WAGE POLICY MAKERS NEED TO SERIOUSLY QUESTION THEIR DECISIONS! Ethiopia is trying to become the new Bangladesh of garment factory labour by promising the lowest wages in the world, but the workers themselves report they're struggling to survive on US$26 a month while stitching clothes for Calvin Klein, H&M and other brands.https://www.abc.net.au/triplej/programs/hack/ethiopian-garment-workers-are-being-paid-worlds-lowest-wages/11098232 That race to the bottom isn't for us.

The only way we can be competitive is to really focus on vocational and technical training - that will justify salaries at middle class level - we need to improve worker productivity. kikuyu1: |
