Perfect For Us by Nobody: 12:44pm On Nov 09, 2019
Pearl rummaged her wardrobe for the 'perfect' dress. She had just ended the call with her best friend Diane, who asked her to quickly dress up that she sent someone to pick her from her apartment.

Diane didn't mention what the occasion was but she told her to dress sexily that it was something special. She didn't argue, she knew Diane to be exactly that way; springing surprises up on people every time without minding their schedule or mood.

Five minutes into the search, she found the dress. A knee length black gown that hugged her curves just perfectly.

"This is it, baby!" she said, triumphantly.

She wore the dress and walked to the mirror. "Well," she turned around so she could see her back. "this is sexy." she concluded.

Pearl couldn't help but admire herself in the black dress, it was tight with a little opening that showed a little of her cleavage and did justice to the sexy look and all of her curves.

Soon, she heard the loud honk outside the apartment. "That is for me, I guess."

She hurriedly picked her purse, phone and walked out.

"Range?" This must be really special then, she thought as she admired the white and sparkling new looking Range Rover parked outside the apartment.

If it's not new then the owner must be a freak for neatness, she thought quietly.

Diane rolled with 'em rich guys but for her to send a Range Rover which looked like a 2019 model, to pick Pearl showed it must be really special.

Diane had the habit of sending people to pick her up whenever there was an event or a hangout. When they first became friends, Diane offered to buy her a car but she declined, she preferred to 'hustle' and get her things herself, so she wouldn't look like a welfare kid or feel like she was in a parasitic relationship with Diane. She was the type that liked to bring different things to the table and not take any, simply put, she preferred being a giver to a receiver.

Pearl wondered what it might be to warrant a Range, it had always been Camry.

She momentarily racked her brain. Her birthday? No way. Diane's birthday was still like eight months away.

What could it be? She wondered as she walked to the car.

It had tinted glasses. She couldn't see who was in it. She tapped gently on the window of the driver's side.

Who ever was inside, gently wound down the glass and poked out his head.

The sight that met her was dazzling.

A drop dead gorgeous, sweet prince staring at her with his big beautiful eyes, eyes that stared directly into her soul, eyes that she wouldn't mind looking at for the rest of her life.

"Pearl?" he asked.

She instantly fell in love with her name again. The way it sounded and the way his lips was shaped when he called it, was out of this world, it looked like he was blowing kisses her way and the voice? It sounded like something just out of Broadway. She couldn't even answer, she found herself drooling with eyes wide open.

"I'm sorry, are you Pearl?"

"Uhm, ye...yeah." She finally found her voice and bowed her head in embarrassment.

"I'm sorry, why were you staring like that? Were you expecting someone else?" he asked, creasing his brows.

She bit her lower lip nervously. She was already dying from embarrassment and the guy just added salt to injury by talking about the issue.

Now, she just wished the ground would just open up and swallow her.

"If you're Pearl then hop in let's go or we'd be late."

She nodded obediently and opened the car and slide in at the back right behind him.

He turned and gave her a puzzled look and then shrugged. Moment later, he drove off at top speed.

Even as he drove and hummed to Flavour's song, Wiser, Pearl still couldn't speak. She was too embarrassed to even think of starting a conversation with him.

"...Eh, eh eh, agam adikwa zi nu wiser ye.
Girl I will be wiser.
I gotta be a little clever yeh
Girl I will be clever ye.
Agam adikwa si nu wiser ye.
I gotta be a little sharper le..."

She quickly made a mental note to stop spending her whole weekends indoors with her laptop and start going out more. If she was the outgoing type, she certainly wouldn't have embarrassed herself in that manner. At least she would have boasted of meeting cuter guys than he.

"Who are you to Diane? I know she wouldn't make me drive all the way from Olive park to here if you're not really close to her." He started.

Mr. Drop dead gorgeous was talking to her.

Waow! She struggled to find her voice. "Uhm..."

Just say it and stop embarrassing yourself, her inner voice chided

"I'm her best friend."

"Wow." he breathed out, obviously that wasn't the answer he was expecting. "How come I don't see you around?"

She fidgeted. How could she start explaining to a total stranger that she preferred her laptop and movies to any outdoor activity. Or how she preferred to work extra time than hang out with Diane and her other 'plenty' friends.

Seeing that she wasn't about to respond to his last question, he continued. "I'm sorry. Forgive my manners. I'm Soma, as in short for Somadina."

Her eyes literally popped out from their sockets. Somadina as in an Igbo name, like igbo, east of Nigeria? She definitely wasn't expecting that. She would never have guessed he was even a Nigerian.

"You don't look like an Igbo guy." She said, instead of continuing the conversation with herself.

His eyes left the road and focused on her...for a second though. He smiled and her heart melted. He had the most beautiful smile she had ever seen since her 23 years on planet earth.

"Well, mum is from Canada and dad is from Enugu state. They met when he went to Canada for his masters. They always tell me it was love at first sight."

"Wow. That's nice to hear."

She found herself wishing she was him. Call it envy or jealousy but she wished she had Soma's kind of parents. He was so lucky to have such parents even though he would never know.

It was truly nice to hear that parents talk about such things with their kids. In her house it wasn't like that. Instead of love and laughter what they got was nagging from mum and hissing from dad. Pearl had been all too glad when she was sent to a boarding school in her JS1. Since then she had stayed away from home as much as possible, her mum's nagging wasn't a pleasant thing to watch or hear.

"Diane never told me she had a beautiful and modest friend like you."

She blushed.

He suddenly pulled to a stop. "Pearl, just come over to the front. I really don't like how you're sitting at my back like some sort of stranger."
Oh! She thought inwardly. That was definitely why he gave her that long stare the moment she entered the car.

"Technically, we are strangers." She countered. This time she did it boldy, she was no longer intimidated by his cute face...maybe just a little.

Yes! She inwardly hailed herself "I should go out more often and meet cute guys" she thought.

"No, we are not." Soma's voice brought her out of her reverie.

"We are!"

"I don't think so. I know your name, you know mine and for heaven's sake, I like you and you like me too."

Lord, the guy is really bold, she thought to herself.

To be continued

"First of all Mr. I don't like you."

He laughed. "Please come to the front seat. I don't get why you're being so defensive. I said like not love. I wouldn't be having this conversation with you if I didn't like you. What do they teach kids in Nigeria?"

"Excuse me?" She was angry. Did he just refer to her as a kid or what? What effrontery? This guy definitely needs to get a taste of her other side
He turned to her and winked. "I'm 26 and you look 21. My younger sister is like two years older than you."

"Just drive and eat your front seat. I'm comfortable here."

The admiration she felt for him earlier on vanished...well, maybe, just a little of it, like 0.5 percent.

"Just drive," he mimicked. "I'm an elder, I deserve a little respect." he said and a smirk followed.

"I'm sorry if I look 21 Mr. Elder but I didn't create myself to look younger than my age. I'm 23." She blurted.

"You don't look 23."

"But I am."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"I doubt it."

"Your doubt and opinion doesn't really matter. It won't change my age."

Now where did that come from? Few minutes ago she wouldn't have dreamt of a conversation with Mr. Drop dead gorgeous but now here she was arguing with him about her age. Wow! What a miracle.

He suddenly started laughing. Much to her amazement. She looked around to see if anything funny was happening around them. Nothing, then why was he laughing?

"I can't believe you fell for that trick." he said amidst laughter. "that's like the oldest trick in the book. I had no idea that people still fall for it here in Nigeria."

Obviously confused, she asked. "What are you talking about?"

"Well, that was just something we do in Canada whenever we wanted to know someone's age and we don't want to ask them straight up."

She felt bad she fell for it so easily. Maybe because she didn't want to come out as dumb or something but she wished she never fell for such easy prank. "I fell for it so easily." her voice dropped a notch.

Soma noticed the tone of her voice and knew she was taking it too far. She must really be a very emotional person and the type that didn't like to fail. He concluded. "Don't be so hard on yourself.

You just didn't know and I enjoyed the drama too." he laughed. "just come sit with me here, I'm sure I can teach you more tricks..." he turned to look at her face. "if you like." a wink followed.

She gladly obliged.

Few seconds later, they were back on the road.
The rest of the ride was smooth as they kept on chatting and laughing like they've known each other for years.

Pearl was surprised to find out that even Soma didn't know what Diane was up to.

"...she told me it's a secret" he had said and shrugged before alighting from the car.

"What's Diane up to now?" Pearl whispered to herself before alighting from the car too.

Knowing how mischievous Diane was, she didn't even know what to expect.

She had not even fully stepped down when she saw Diane walking towards her.

"Here comes the queen of hearts." Soma whispered to her hearing, wearing a mischievous smile.

"Tell me something I don't know." she whispered back, smiling at Diane who was half running and half walking towards them.

"Hey," Diane came to them, panting. "what kept the two of you?"

"Traffic jam." Soma replied and turned to wink at Pearl.

Diane noticed the eye movement and the small smile that followed.

"Tell me something I don't know." she nodded knowingly.

"I told you, it's traffic jam."

Diane gave him a small punch on his shoulder. "I was born and brought up in this city. Technically. So, I know better." she then turned to Pearl. "Tell me what kept you?"

"Traffic...

"Don't lie to me."

With the way she was speaking to them, one would think she was their mum, despite her average height and her small body size she still wielded some form of authority over the two tall fellows, well the 6 inches heels she had on did justice to her height and she could look at Soma and Pearl eye ball to eye ball while talking which wouldn't be like that under normal circumstances. Like without the heels circumstance.

Pearl stood smiling at Diane who already started a teaching on punctuality. Mama Diane as she usually called her. Diane liked to be in charge and she always stood out due to her very light skin and her gaped tooth. The lady was a beauty to behold, Pearl couldn't argue that but no telling that she was also talkative.

"Are you done talking Mummy?" Soma rubbed his beards.

"Yes son," she eyed him. "if you don't learn how to be punctual now, when will you be? When you finally take over your dad's company?"

His expression showed he didn't like the direction the conversation was beginning to take. "I'm sorry mummy. Can I go meet Richie now?"

Richie was Diane's boyfriend. Despite the fact that Soma had known her for many years before even meeting Richie. He still preferred to hang out with Richie.

She rolled her eyes at him.

He rolled his eyes and a smirk followed. "I brought your friend already" licking his lips, he mouthed. "your beautiful friend."

"This one is not for you." she warned.

Pearl almost collapsed in embarrassment. God, she thought, Diane doesn't even have mouth filter anymore. She said everything the way it came to her mind.

Luckily, Soma didn't answer. He just smiled and walked past her.

"Kill me o," Pearl almost screamed at Diane as soon as they were left alone.

"He's cute but he's a heart breaker. I'm just letting him know his boundaries in time." Diane explained.

A heart breaker? For real? That's one word Pearl wasn't expecting to hear. She was skeptical about it. He looked so innocent and harmless.

TBC.
