They were found hawking and not wandering and begging shamelessly. There's a world of difference between both.

The last picture is a complete aberration and should not have been taken, least of all released to the public. If the state government is supposedly trying to take these children off the streets, which is commendable, why were they then required to take pictures with the very items that represent the ills of their conditions and with the Commissioner standing right there? These are children whose identities should be protected yet the same government has released such an uncomplimentary picture, to what end? Someone obviously asked them to carry those bowls and stand with the commissioner, it is not a random picture and that is the worst form of insensitivity!

Governance/leadership in this country leaves a lot to be desired. The better picture should have been to show these children enrolled in schools and dressed in clean uniforms within a learning environment not this! Their families should also be evaluated and provided with sustainable livelihood skills and some capital or equipment to keep the kids off the streets.
I agree with you 100% about insensitivity, but on the other hand, showing neatly dressed children caught hawking during school hours conveyed nothing, that's basically misrepresenting the situation with neatly dressed children in a classroom that doesn't highlight the seriousness and damaging impact of the situation and the toll on the society.

Pictures sometimes mobilize and galvanize us to take a stand and make needed changes.

My emphasis was on the last picture. If the idea was to stop them from hawking and provide better alternatives/options, they should not have been made to pick up and carry the same items that represent their unfortunate situations. The other pictures with them sitting with those bowls sufficiently captured whatever essence without further dehumanising them. You can see them in one picture hiding their faces and then they are forced to stand up, carry the hawking items and smile for the camera! Where then is the relief? How would you feel if you were in such a situation?

It is usually criminals that are caught in the act that are shamed by forcing them to continue holding unto whatever item they were caught with in public glare. However, these children are not criminals, so they did not have to be used/portrayed in such a callous manner.

I always feel bad each time I sight them. I see the peanuts they make despite the stress and hardship they go through daily in traffic.

Well, I have the habit of leaving small change for them each time. The smile on their faces on each occasion in invaluable.

NOW, the truth is that we will always have the poor among us.( Note that this term poor is relative --except you are using UNO or other organisations' standards.)

Even in New York, people still hawk in traffic.

The difference is that they aren't school kids.
And the poor also benefit from basic amenities like good education, roads, health care etc.

UNLIKE in nagelia.

It's well.

ASIDE:

Malcom Gladwell in "OUTLIERS" asserts that nobody makes it alone. That most successes like that of Tiger woods, Bill Gates etc are owed to cumulative advantages early in life.

Making it in life is dependent on several factors ranging from family level, talent, LUCK etc.
Part of the above factors gives a person a cumulative advantage. This is also called "The mathew effect in sociology, -- gotten from the bible.

Serena Williams and sister Venus owe their success to this factor. I won't dwell much on this because of time.

There is some level of luck. Yes. Some call this luck, kismet, serendipity, accident or God factor.

Geoff Colvin agrees when he wrote his book "Talent is overrated"

My point is that it's unhealthy to compare yourself with others, because your realities and background are different. Nobody makes it alone.

Enjoy and appreciate your level now, while you work for more.

Don't look down on others except you fancy their shoes. Some of the things we brag about, we never merited or worked for them.

The drivers, conductors, pepper sellers etc all deserve respect.

It could have been any of us. But nature was kinder to some of us.

Cheers!
you said it well sis
you've got a great mentality in that mind of yours
i can bet my naira and rice that you are a lovely person

If other people hear you now, they won't know it is ordinary Lagos that this clown is bragging about.
Not anywhere else in the brown roof republic.

And the irony is that he does not pay tax to the Lagos, but he can insult tax payers.

Nice development. Let every child be educated....
If you want to be rich don't go to school because the hardest place to get rich is working for somebody. We value money more than education. Most of billionaires we have today in Nigeria made it not by what they study at school.
For the fact that women are bad does not mean that they are not good. It just depend on which side you are viewing it from.

Of course Jack Ma, Bill gates, Mark Zukerberg and Jeff Bezos didn't go to school.
One thing I've come to appreciate about knowledge is that, you can't discuss what you don't know.

The government should be arresting their PARENTS!
People have kids they cannot raise and then use them as free/cheap labor. SMH

There are way MORE billionaires who went to school than those who did not...
Attending school gives way more skills than just what you study in the classroom.

Yes we are saying almost the same thing . learning handwork and going to high institution are all game of chance (gambling). Because in survivorship bias one will only see the winners without taking account of how many people that participated in it.
