It can only affect civil servants. Anambra economy is private sector driven. Economy of the state is not in the hands of the government unlike other states(Lagos, Rivers excluded) that have civil service as their stay of their economy for their population.

If this was to happen in a state in the North in honour of one of theirs, the same people commending the move will be all over social media condemning and telling whosoever cares to listen, that the north is so lazy and responsible for Nigeria's backwardness.

The same way the criticized a state there for making Hausa a language of first instruction in schools only for one of their states to pass a similar legislation.

Hypocritical children. cheesy

I taught my pupil(pry5) hw he was able to speak the three languages fluently and even told them i will ask them in their exam.
he was born in zungeru, niger state.
he was able to speak hausa fluently.
his father want him to learn how to speak igbo,so he was sent to onitsha to stay with his grandma and aunt.
some year later,he was bitten by a dog and was sent to lagos(where is father work) for proper health care. There he learnt how to speak yoruba
to my suprise,my pupils was telling me on friday that ZIK Birthday was on saturday. That leads to argument among the pupils(some say they dont celeberate the birthday of a dead person while others oppose it). It was fun and am proud to be a teacher coz they enjoy the story.
how i wish they are reading this topic,bt they are primary 5 pupils.
Come on man open Nairaland akant for them! This is 21st century wink

Anambra declares Monday public holiday in honour of Zik

17th November 2019 in National

https://www.sunnewsonline.com/anambra-declares-monday-public-holiday-in-honour-of-zik/

The Government of Anambra State has declared Monday, November 18, 2019, a Public Holiday in honour of the great Owelle of Onitsha, Nigeria’s indigenous Governor-General Right Honourable Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe.

A statement from the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Anambra State, Mr James Eze noted that the Public Holiday which was declared to mark the birthday of the pioneer President should have held on his actual birthday which is Saturday, November 16, 2019, but has to be observed on Monday, November 18 for obvious reasons.

“Following this declaration, Monday, November 18, 2019, shall be observed as a work-free day in Anambra State” it stated.

According to the statement “ the declaration came on the heels of repeated appeals by the governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano to the Federal Government to declare a national public holiday in honour of the great Zik as has been done for other illustrious leaders across the continent who led their respective countries from the shackles of colonial rule to independence.

“Governor Obiano had used the opportunity of the commissioning of Zik Mausoleum in January this year to appeal that Nigeria should set aside a Public Holiday in honour of the great Zik just as Ghana did for Kwame Nkrumah, as Kenya did for Jomoh Kenyatta, as Tanzania did for Julius Nyerere and as Angola did for Agostinho Neto”.

The state government stressed that the Great Zik of Africa had so much influence on the nationalist struggles for independence across Africa and played a unique brand of all-inclusive politics that left no place for ethnicity and religion all of which make the case for a national day in his honour very compelling.

“Therefore, from this year onwards, November 16 has been set aside in Anambra State to commemorate Right Hon Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, celebrate his legacies and reflect on the ideals and values that the great statesman lived and died for.

“It is expected that in blazing the trail by setting a day aside for Zik, Anambra State Government is making the case for a national holiday in honour of Zik a compelling one.

“It must be remembered that the Great Zik of Africa was one of the greatest Pan-Africanists who devoted his life and times to the struggle for the emancipation of Africa and people of African descent.

“Till today, Zik remains the only Nigerian President who spoke Igbo, Hausa, and Yoruba fluently and the only one whose children bore names that reflect the three major ethnic groups in the country.

How can a man who betrayed and sold his people be celebrated.

Zik is the reason why the SE is backward today with very low mortality.

Misplaced priority

Actually Anambra should not be celebrating the great Zik because he singlehanded prevented their becoming African Dubai by refusing to split up the country as Awo wanted. Oil was discovered in the East shortly after. Nigeria should be celebrating Zik, but not Anambra. See the bolded.

HOW ZIK STOPPED NIGERIA FROM BREAKING UP IN 1957

In 1957 the British Colonial Government, under intense pressure from Southern politicians pressing for independence, attempted to uncouple the union between the North and South forged through Lord Lugard's Amalgamation of 1914, with the offer of independence to the three Regions individually provided any two accepted the offer. The Northern Region, led by the Northern Peoples Congress (NPC) took the position that the North was not ready for that level of political and economic independence. The Western Region, led by Chief Awolowo's Action Group (AG) promptly, declared its readiness to accept the offer. It was the Igbo-led NUNC that held the balance. It was an issue that could make or break Nigeria if the three Regions chose to go their separate ways to independence.

The NUNC leader, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe took the stand that although the Eastern Region was ready to assume the responsibilities of Regional independence, its attainment without the North would lead, in his own words, to the ''Baalkanization of the Nigeria Nation'' and conceivably a break-up of the country. The Eastern Region would rather suppress it's appetite for independence and the obvious gains it would entail until the Northern Region was ready. That was how Nigeria Independence was delayed until 1960. In short, the Igbo-led Eastern Region would rather forgo the advancement of its own political economic interests than risk the break-up of Nigeria.

IN 1960 OIL, BLACK GOLD, WAS DISCOVERED IN THE EAST!! But instead of being a blessing it became a curse that indirectly led to a civil war that killed millions Igbos.
ALL BECAUSE OF ZIK

Nnamdi Azikiwe maybe a national hero but a con to his his tribe and region. He doesn't in anyway command respect down here and Anambrarians does not in any way regard him as a great man. Obiano never disappoint, he will always maneuver and find avenue to exploit the state purse in the name honouring a man that dishonoured himself. Another avenue to withdraws $$$ to feed his drunkard troat.
