*******

"There are some situation that calls for persistence and there are some that do not." Diane answered dryly.

"Philosopher."

Diane was witty, intelligent, beautiful, nerdy and gorgeous. All in one.

"Oya, gist me." Diane eyes twinkled. Pearl couldn't miss that look that simply spelt gossip. "Where did you go yesterday?"

Peale feigned ignorance and wore her I-don't-know-what-you're-talking-about expression.

"Don't play dumb with me!" Diane warned.

"Yes Mummy." a laughed followed. "We didn't actually go anywhere. We just drove around while gisting."

Diane looked at her like she was shocked by her words. "Soma, drive around and gist?"

"Yeah. Why are you surprised."

"Because he doesn't gist with ladies. He just takes them to bed."

"For those who want to be taken." Pearl answered, wryly.

"Be careful with him. After his first terrible relationship, he became very cruel with ladies."

Pearl instantly felt terrible for him. "Tell me what happened." she was already so curious. She wanted to get the full details.

"It's not my story to tell. He's my friend and you're also my best friend. I just don't like him for you. I don't like what I hate."

She gave Diane a slight punch. "I never said I wanted to date him."

"That's how it starts. Ditching parties together. Calling, chatting and the next thing, you hear, We are a couple."

"I have no intentions of dating him." she clarified again.

"I've heard you maami." Daine laughed. She could tell that Pearl was already taking it seriously. She had told her times without number to stop taking everything so serious or else she would have a heart attack before she turned 30

"So, tell me how your day went." Pearl probed. Diane always had a full load of gist.

"Went out to look for a good location for my business."

"Just that?"

"With Richie. We actually took a bus. Before you ask why, I've forgotten how it feels to be in a public bus." she laughed in her normal devilish manner. "So, I had to force Richie to go on the ride with me."

"He would not like that."

Diane threw her head back and laughed heartily.
"He didn't subscribe to the idea at all."

"He had no choice."

"The downside of dating an adventurous girl. I warned him though."

"So, hope you found the perfect location?"

"I did. You need to see it. Maybe tomorrow or so."

"Tomorrow but don't come barging into my workspace and shouting Pack."

"Ah. I have a reputation." She blared the horn at a driver who kept on driving fast and then slow like he was on in his private road. "See them, that's how they will be putting innocent lives at risk."

She got closer and pointed her fingers at the driver, in a 'be warned' manner.

"Gist me about the search."

Diane's eyes glittered.

So many gists, Pearl could tell.
"I've told you we took public transport, right?"

Pearl nodded. "We got to Wuse. Checked out the location and it was perfect."

"Finally, she is going to have her own business and stop disturbing our peace at the office." Pearl said, more to herself than to Diane.

That hurts, was Diane's only reply before her phone rang.

She quickly navigated and packed by a side before picking the call.

She spoke to whoever was at the other end for about two minutes before turning to Pearl with a half smile.

"Tell me it's not something mischievous." Pearl begged.

"No, plans changed. Let's go hang out with the guys."

"Guys? Tell me it's not Richie and his twenty side kicks?"

Richie was so young, already made, generous and a force to reckon with, as a result young people always struggled to get close to him wherever he went. He never failed to accept their offer of friendship. Because of all that, you will never find him alone except he just wanted go hang out with Diane, his girlfriend.

"I'm not sure of sidekicks." she winked at Pearl. "But I know someone who will be there."

Pearl rolled her eyes and looked sideways. She already knew who Diane was referring to.

"Who am I to put asunder?" she heard Diane say, with her gaze focused on the roads.

"I'm serious." Diane made a puppy face at her, momentarily distracting her. "I agree, I was smitten by his beauty when I first saw him."

"He has that effect on everybody." Diane said matter-of-factly.

"See! don't blame me."

She had no idea that Diane had not finished talking. "He has the effect on everybody but not everybody follows him home before a hang out even kicks off officially."

She knew Diane was deliberately trying to get on her nerves. She picked the hairbrush on the dashboard and threw it her. "We only drove around for a while before he dropped me off."

Diane only looked at her but she didn't utter a word. Her facial expression showed she wanted to hear more so she continued.

"...Besides, ditching a party with a guy and following him home, would count as a modern day prostitution. I mean, you have never met this person in your life before and then all of a sudden, he appears from nowhere and you followed him home. What if he is a ritualist? Even if he's not. What are you going there to do?"

She looked at Diane and realized that she was now taking to herself. Diane busied herself nodding to an imaginary music.

Pearl slowly rolled her eyes and relaxed on her chair.

She had a really smooth and easy day and days which was not worth her salary. Thanks to Diane, she earned more than what any other person who does that same job in a different company would earn.

Meeting Diane was miracle. In a way, it happened like the usual romantic scenes she usually saw in Nollywood movies. She was under the rain that day at a bus station. There was no bus or even shelter. Some people ran under the bridge across but she stayed put.

There was no point. She was already soaking wet.

Just then, a flashy car slowly passed by her. She figured that whoever was driving wasn't a fan of rain and she got that right. Few seconds later, the driver came back and pulled to a stop before her.
She didn't move an inch from where she was. she already concluded that it was an old man who was looking for a young girl to take advantage of.
The driver kept on honking but she ignored. She couldn't even see him because of the tinted windows but she already had her mind made up.
She got tired of the blaring horn and decided to walk away when the driver wound down the glasses.

Lo and behold. It was a young girl. Just about her age or a year older.

She threw cautions to the wind and ran into the car.

"Hey," Daine said, the moment she entered, flashing her perfect white teeth.

"Hi. Thank you so much for this. God bless you." She didn't know what else to say.

"You're welcome."

Diane kept on driving slowly till she dropped her off. At a point she even suggested she stopped somewhere to get her dry clothes and food but Pearl declined.

The sound of Diane's finger snapping brought her out of her reverie.

"We are here?" she said even though the answer was already obvious.

"No, we are not. We are still on our way. Biko, come down. The guys are waiting."

She rolled her eyes and smiled. Trust Diane to reply a stupid question with a stupid answer.
She stepped out and they walked in side by side.

The first person her eyes caught was Soma, the breathtaking Soma.

She smiled and he waved at her, equally smiling and showing those teeth and dimples.

She heaved silently. He was making her heart race. He looked more than handsome, in a fitted jacket. Pearl could tell that he was also returning from work, just like her.

They got to the table and they started to exchange pleasantries.

Soma stood up and hugged her when she stretched her hand for a handshake.

He's too forward, she thought silently making a mental note to talk to him about it later.

"Say Hello to my new friend, Miss Pearl." he winked at her. He could tell she was so uncomfortable in his arms.

There were just five other people at the table aside Diane and Soma, she couldn't even pin point to why she was being so nervous.

She immediately launched her operation mingle more in her head.

While the others who didn't know her already were greeting her for the second time, she struggled to find her words, at the end she settled for just smiling and nodding like an agama lizard.

They settled down and drinks were served. Pearl started to wonder what they were celebrating or if it's another hangout. The way of rich kids are not the way of everyone. She thanked God that she was well dressed. If not for anything, she looked really good in her black pencil skirt and floral top and her makeup was still okay.

"Soma, Richie said," Diane started, throwing a quick glance at her boyfriend, Richie before turning to face Soma again. "Richie said you called this meeting. I'm wondering what's up. Normally, this kind of thing is usually associated with my name."

They all laughed and nodded in acknowledgement. Diane gave a quick princess bow.

Anything party, call Diane. She would see to it that everything went really well which explained why everybody was so in support of her starting her own event planning and make-up business.
Soma stood up as if he was being remote controlled. "Well, I'm not the party type or outing type. At least, not anymore. But I just thought I should celebrate this new phase of my life."

"Straight to the point please," A guy who introduced himself as David interrupted and Diane concurred.

"Since we have impatient people in out midst. Well, the thing is that as from next week, I'm taking over, or rather, I will be the new CEO of the company."

"Yes," Diane screamed. "I knew it. I saw it coming."
Pearl turned to her with a puzzled look. Sometime she forgot that Diane was a billionaire's daughter and this was one of such times.

Sounds of congratulations rented the air. Pearl also stood up and gave him another hug and mouthed congratulations. Not that she planned on the hug, but the moment she stood up, he opened his arms and she was left with no choice.

The celebration soon started and lasted for an hour before they all went their separate ways.

Diane dropped Pearl off and left immediately since she had an appointment with the young guy in charge of the furnishing for her new business.

Few minutes after she settled down to a bowl of rice and stew. She heard a loud honk outside her apartment.

Without being told, she knew who it was. He had whispered "I will see you later" into her ears when they were about saying their goodbyes.

She looked outside and she wasn't wrong. This time around it wasn't a Range Rover but a Toyota Camry. He walked majestically to her door and knocked.

"It's open," she shouted.

"Wow, you have a nice apartment. A too nice one for a 23 year old."

"Is that supposed to be a compliment?" she stood up to meet him where he stood at the door. She didn't even know what prompted the action.

"It's a wonderful compliment." he clarified.

"I bet you live in a mansion."

He smiled. "You would be disappointed to know that I still stay with my parents."

What is it with rich kids. Pearl literally screamed in her head. Even Diane still lived with her parents. Despite them being richer and older, she was already living alone, in fact, from her JS1 she was already living alone.

"Why so?" she was curious. Diane did say that she enjoyed living with her dad and causing him problem and raising his bp. That was understandable, she was a daddy's girl.

"I used to live alone until I found out that some girls don't like to date guys without house. So, I moved in with my parents. Whenever I say I'm living with my parents, some will instantly loose interest in me."

"But you have cars." she was surprised at his words. The girls she's heard of are ready to do anything for a guy that drives anything on four wheels.

"I only change cars to impress you." he joked.

"Silly you. You didn't even know me until yesterday."

"Yet, I brought my favourite car to pick you." he confessed.

"Wow. I'm impressed." she couldn't hide the fact that he made her feel free. Unlike her, she was talking freely and laughing.

Maybe because he was Diane's friend and Diane never joked with her. She would kill him if she got any bad report about him.

"What are you watching?" he asked, distracting her from her thoughts.

"I'm actually reading. The TV is just there."

"What are you reading?"

"Life's Colour By Victoria Nwanna" she went to the couch and picked up the book. Handing it to him, she said. "It's an interesting one."

"I don't read motivational stuffs anymore. They rarely motivate me."

Pearl understood his reluctance. She used to be like that until she read Never Give up by Joyce Meyer and she immediately fell in love with anything motivational.

"I've not finished it. But you can have it for now."

He gave her his most surprised look. "Told you I don't do motivational."

"Give it a try."

He shrugged and kept the book by his side.
The continued to talk like long last friends that just recently reunited. She don't know what it was but she was so excited talking to him. He wasn't afraid to talk about his fears and insecurities. She found herself opening up to him about certain things she never mentioned to anyone.

"I guess it's time to go before my dad locks the gate again."

She laughed. "Locks the gate? Again? Why?" she was surprised.

"Yeah, he did it once when I stayed out too late. According to him its his house and I must obey his rules and that means no late nights."

One of a kind. His dad gave him such rules and he conformed?

"You don't go to clubs?"

"Nah. Not anymore. I'm working towards being a successful man. I've lived that life and there's no gain in it." he waved his hand in her face. "I don't mean it's wrong. Just that, too much of everything is bad. It's cool to turn up once a while but don't make it look like a paid job."

And he said he didn't do motivational? That's laughable, Pearl thought.

"How free are you this weekend?" he asked before stepping into his car.

"Not too free. I watch movies on Friday nights and sleep all through Saturday except Diane comes to wake me."

Soma laughed quietly. Diane's reputation. "Before she wakes you. I will wake you first."

"You're Diane's friend, I should have known you would behave like her."

"You're her best friend and you don't behave like her." He winked.

After a little bantering. He drove away but not before giving her a pat on the shoulder a with a promise to read the book she gave him.

Pearl kept on smiling as she walked into her apartment. She ditched the movie she had in mind and went to bed smiling.

Minutes later, her phone rang.

An unknown number. She watched it ring for a while and concluded there was no harm in answering the call.

"Hello,"

"Hi, it's me Tony. I got your number from Diane."

This story makes me want to have another male bestie.
Like, Soma and Pearl are really okay as they are, most people want them to date, I ship them too, but just friends is less complicated, but they could also regret staying as friends when they could have been something more....

This new guy Tony, I don't like his vibes, "I got ur number from....."
If he's going to be good, then he's okay for Pearl, I don't want to start hearing dat he's jealous of Soma and Pearl's closeness.

B4 I forget, thanks for d update
