Edo state governor, Godwin Obaseki, on Tuesday said the new National Minimum Wage of N30,000 is not enough to take workers home. Obaseki disclosed this while delivering his address at the 7th Quadrennial National Delegates conference of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) held in Abuja.

Though Edo state currently has a minimum wage of N25,000, he said N30,000 won’t be a problem noting that “N30,000 is not enough for workers as take home.” He also stated that strong institutions are the corner stone of any stable government in a developed country adding that for Nigeria to meet world best practices, “funding of education, healthcare research institutions and other social services are critical functions of the states; functions that must be prioritised because it is foundational to the organisation and the development of the state.” He added that Nigeria does not need strong men but strong institutions.

“As we strive towards becoming a developed country, the first thing should be more on what we create not whom we create, more on things we put in place for the future generation to see and utilise much more than what will benefit us today,” Obaseki added. Meanwhile, the NASU president, Comrade Chris Ani, noted that “as the statement that Nigeria’s economy remains in a state of comatose as a result of over reliance on revenue from oil cannot be overemphasized,” he called on the government at all levels to fashion out policies that will grow the economy of the country.

He lamented that over reliance on imported goods has turned the country into a dumping ground for all manner of goods and creating jobs for citizens of the exporting countries. To address the menace of unemployment in the country, Ani urged government at all levels to take note that no nation can develop when its active manpower remain underutilised.

I love this man, we just need someone like him to be the president of this country. I am sure he would transform this country within 8 years. Yahaya Bello should learn from this man and emulate his sense of reasoning and action.

That is how they all sound when elections are near.

Obaseki stop fooling Edo civil servants. What minimum did you used to pay before commencement of the 30k minimum?

From the answer we will know how honest you are with this assertion of today.

Well that's commendable.

I think then, that this today's assertion is not an election gimmick to tarry votes.

I think he honestly feels is not enough and may increase it beyond 30k if re-elected based on that promise.

Some greedy self-centered politicians think 30k is anything reasonable for a month

Let's say I earn 30k every month
Transportation costs me an average of #500 daily; this involves a lot of trekking to work.
If I choose to be frugal, I will spend at most #500 everyday on feeding at work. Already 1k per day x 24 days i.e 24k. No recharge cards, no smoking, no drinking, no womanizing, no house rents. Imagine a family man of 3 earning this same amount in this hard time where a bag of rice costs nearly your salary

The senators and HOR members salary should be reduced to 100k and minimum wage 35k. Nigerians are just wicked to each other. How can the NASS always be quick to increase their own payments but when they hear small thing like 30k minimum wage, they’ll all start vibrating?

I mean this is oil money, since we can’t use it to develop our country, why can’t they just use it to pay our workers? 30k is taking them forever to approve but to collect 50 naira from every of transaction it took them just 2 mins to approve.

I think we should change the name sha to Marlian Nation to see if things will start working.

Where is the 'human face' in governance?

Woke up with strength and vigour this morning and was up to face today with all hopes and aspirations but was sad & almost started crying after watching this video.

I've been an advocate of leaders been strong at all time with will power to carry out leadership responsibilities. And that emotional leaders don't go far but certainly not this way.

In leadership and governance, there's a place for 'Human face' no matter the circumstances. Widows to the best of my knowledge are integral part of our society and if we don't apply human face when dealing with them, am afraid we are far from getting there as a people.

Two wrongs indeed can never make things right and as such, can't fathom why the Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams A. O. will treat this widow like this and even tell her to go and die when she's struggling to provide food for her family. I think it would've been far better to make her pay a fine for her wrong doing than this humiliation.

The agony of the poor in our society......

When elections is near, they turn to motivational speakers, talk like Les Brown and behave gentle like John the Baptist. One week after they win elections, they go back to talking like Pharaoh, living like Nebuchadnezzar and behaving like Idi Amin. That's Nigerian politicians for you. Evil people!

Moral of the Story: you can't legislate poverty away. Increase salaries and everything rises in price; the majority who are not in Governemnt bare most of the brunt.
