Dr. Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State has stated that the problem of Nigeria is bad governance and not corruption, adding that the nation is currently plagued by bad governance.

The former governor stated this on Wednesday at the Diocese of Lagos (Anglican Communion) Centenary Anniversary with the theme: ‘The church and good governance in Nigeria’.

He called on the church to ensure that those who go into leadership are qualified and competent.

“The greatest job of the church is advocacy. And the church should ensure that those who go into leadership are qualified and competent.

“Our problem is bad leadership, there is too much waste in governance, the cost of governance in Nigeria at all levels are too high,” he stated.

He said, “The church should stop celebrating and praising corrupt politicians,” but insisting on telling them the truth because power to serve is of God.

Rev. (Dr) Humphrey Bamisebi Olumakaiye, the Diocesan Bishop of Lagos, also speaking at the event said that the lecture and its theme was one of the ways the church plays her godly roles.

He said, “The theme of the lecture is just a way we play our godly role and in teaching Christian virtues of honesty, righteousness and dignity in hard work.
