Mrs. Rachael Adewumi, founder of TAKEM Empowerment Initiatives (TEIs), an NGO, has advised women against remaining full-time housewives.

Adewumi, at an end-of-year party on Sunday in Abuja, urged women to get an employment or learn a trade.

The party was organised by the NGO to support widows with household items.

Adewumi explained that it was no longer news that a lot of women go into depression as a result of the sudden death of their husbands, who were the bread winners of the family.

“Such narrative must change; women should be allowed to work to support their husbands so that they won’t be a burden to anyone when their husbands are not there.

“A lot of them with nothing to fall back on, end up dying as well, leaving the children to suffer in the hands of the society or relatives.


“Some even go into prostitution and are exposed to diseases. It is necessary for us to advise women not to rely solely on their husbands, ” she said.

According to her, the NGO has empowered 500 Abuja rural women to improve and sustain their livelihoods through different support programmes.

She added that women ready to learn had been supported through scholarships and payment of school fees across the three levels of education in the country. She said that youths and widows had benefited from conventional training and starter packs with which to start up businesses.

I read about madam ladi kwali, the woman on the face of one of our currencies and I marvelled. Northern men have caged and killed the destiny of the likes of madam ladi in the north. The earlier they change from their archaic way of life the better.

A woman can be working and still be incurring losses after subtracting child care fees, transportation, feeding and maintenance.

Same thing I tell those who care to listen. I've personally advised some women to quit some senseless jobs and go sit at home.

The line between gainful employment and slavery/financial f00lishness is very thin.

it's a fact. Even in government, they're very few. Challenge me if you can. Just yesterday, your governor in kano said girls should attain secondary school before they get married...what a foolish statement. Whereas down south , school cert is just the beginning of our girls quest for education. Northern men need to abolish their age long, archaic tradition so as to spread prosperity in the region. A hausaman who had 2 wives, cagng them in the house but suddenly lost his means of livelihood...how would he take care of them and his many young children since his wives aren't engaged? That's why poverty is a commonplace amongst you. The male children would end up on the streets begging while the female ones amongst them would end up in the homes of 60-70 years old men who would only subject them to VVF disease because their genital is too small to take their manhood. I see them all over. What a pity

Not everyone can be gainfully employed.

A Woman that earns enough for child's care, transportation, feeding and maintenance to me is relatively ok as far as she's not 100% percent depending to the husband or any other beneficiaries.

Well captured. The sad reality is that in Nigeria today, a lot of men are not “gainfully” employed and what they bring home can hardly cater for their families but they still need to go out daily to hustle, so for a woman there shouldn't also be a benchmark of income.

In Nigeria, who pays women to be full time housewife? Reality is go out and earn no matter how little most importantly for self-esteem. It is not easy on women swallowing the insults that comes with being fully dependent on their husbands.
