This matter has been made very clear in the public domain that Awolowo sought alliance with the north and the east at the same time.
The same Awolowo who desperately wanted to get political power immediately after he was released from jail against the norm joined a government of another northerner as a vice president and a minister of finance. One wonders if at the time he joined the government of Gowon if he was still moving with his conviction of alliance with the east better.

I am still very surprised that Southern socio-cultural groups have not responded to the conflicts and inter-tribal wars in NW.
