Dear NL.
Recently, I was offered admission into a federal university to study psychology. I've always wanted to be a lecturer, so I opted for a course that wouldn't be much of a problem to me. My plan is to give in my best so as to come out excellent, go for my Masters abroad and venture into lecturing.

The problem here is: my parent doesn't buy the idea. They keep saying that landing a lecturing job is hard to come bye these days, that I might end up being disappointed. Moreover, a course such as psychology isn't one to expect any thing good from, especially here in Nigeria.

Now they are pleading I consider Nursing, according to them, I stand a higher chance of getting a job in a nursing profession to psychology. They are planning on sending me out of the country after the program. Should I just dash off my dream of becoming a lecturer to pursue nursing?

I love being around young people, and being in a university setting as a lecturer gives me that privilege to teach, mentor and guide them and at the same time work on my self. I think I'll find fulfilment as an academic. I'm confused, what would you advise me, if I were to be your brother?
Thanks

How much do u think nurses earn in private hospitals? Its pathetic. If u dont have passion for nursing, dont go near it so that u will not be frustrated.
You better follow your dream of studying psychology if thats what u really want.

Forget all these "Nursing is better" chanting people.
Go and study psychology fast.
Study it with a business mind.

By the time Buhari finishes with us in 2023, psychologists will be in hot demand as almost half the population of Nigeria will want to hang themselves.

Weighing both(psychology and nursing)
Where do you think a psychologist will get work?
Nursing has better prospects than psychology.Someone who studied health education has more prospect than psychology in my own opinion.

Please go for nursing... If you then travel out to America, then you have it jackpot. Registered Nurses are in high demand in the U.S. you can then go for your Masters in Nursing to specialise in a particular field. Then later a P.h.D in nursing... Nurse Anastestics are the highest earning Nurses in America. I know of a Nurse Anastetics that earns up to $190k a year in San Francisco, some earn more than that. Please go for nursing, good luck.

Nursing should be a personal choice as it entails a lot.
If you can't stand the sight of blood, sores, if you have photophobia, dont go into nursing cos it will just be a waste as you're not going to be able to work with it.

Make your parents understand you can stand the sight of these things to help you drive home a point for them to see reasons with you.

Nursing I wanna believed is inborn. Those who do it have been born to do it. Many who tried going into for the sake of it, got out las las either during one of those practical test they normally give them before they finally become Certified Nurses.

Me I can't stand blood or seeing someone badly injured, I'll just faint. No one can talk me into doing it.
My opinion though.

If you go to Nursing school, someone will teach you. In future, you could be the one teaching others. In other words, you will be a nurse and lecturer combined--killing two birds with one stone.

You're making the right choice. I can bet you.
Try do registration exam and become a registered nurse afterwards. Then move to a better country and make a good living easily.

Those stupid courses people study in Nigeria are no longer practicable in developed countries.

Imagine people studying Anatomy, Parasitology, and so on as majors. Thats insane.

Take this advice.. If you are in Nigeria I strongly advice you do Nursing, but if you are abroad or have the desire to travel after your program do any. Psychology sells in the Western world not Naija that we don't value it.

The average man who is mundane in his thinking will tell his child to think of the course that will offer him a job quickly. People that change this world are people who do what they love and do it excellently.

I'm a nurse, it was never in my dream to become a nurse being a guy. But I tell you, I've always blessed the day I accepted my uncle's advice to take nursing. There are unlimited opportunities in it. No worries about unemployment because if govt didn't employ, lots of organizations will always employ u, most especially in Lagos. Now, the best aspect is the opportunity to travel out. Developed countries like UK and USA are in short of nurses and are accepting us rush rush. All u need to do is pass ielts and their council exam. They will give u job b4 getting there and even pay for ur flight. I'm almost done passing the exams and next year, unfailingly, I would be in the uk. Most of my colleagues are there already.
Bro, nursing all the way o

My dear if you’re really traveling abroad after the nursing degree (specifically USA because I don’t know about other countries)
Don’t let anyone play with your destiny. Just quietly go and study the nursing they are pleading with you to do.

You won’t get a job the moment you land in America. You will have to pass the nclex first. for some folks trained outside the USA, it takes a while for them to pass it but we Nigerians are hardworking and I’m sure you will make it. and then the job will be coming for you.

And the money is NICE. that’s all I can tell you.
