sonofElElyon:
"Behold a virgin shall conceive and bear a son".. it was prophesied by Isaiah. Only a virgin could've given birth to the Saviour
In the original text, the word used was almah which can mean any of young woman, maiden, virgin. And not necessarily virgin. If Isaiah had used the word bethulah then, there would be no question about whether Mary was a virgin or not.

And you are wrong to say that only a virgin could have given birth to the Savior.

The truth is that God could have used anyone. The keyword is not virginity, but God's favor.

Supposing Mary was a virgin, it would be hard to believe that she was the only virgin in Israel at that time. The only difference between Mary and other virgins was that Mary found favor in the eyes of God.

If God could use a pagan king (Cyrus) and even called him My Anointed , then God can use anyone for His work as long as that person has found favor in the eyes of God.

For instance, the Jews did not expect that God would send the Messiah into the home of a common carpenter when there were families of wealthy Pharisees, Saducees and Scribes in Israel. But, man is not God. The ways of God is totally different from the ways of men. That is why He is God.

God bless.
That is how the Bible lied to you and we were told woman was created out of man, only to find out through science that the y chromosome in man is a genetic defect of the X chromosome in woman, by it having less of about 2% genetic material. The oldest living being is known as Lucy. Does Lucy sound like a man or woman’s name? Or you think the names, Mother Nature, Mother Earth, Mother Land, Mother of all storms etc just popped out of nowhere.

What do you think the Bible meant by virgin? and no, it does not mean a woman that has never had sex before.

Would Mary Have Been Chosen To Be The Mother Of Jesus If She Wasn't A Virgin?

I believe Mary was one of the rarest gems that humanity has ever produced, for she had a great heart and a very deep understanding of the things of God.

That said, the truth remains that all such human qualities which contributed to making her the special woman she was, wouldn't have sufficed for her to be chosen by God to become the mother of Jesus, had she had lost her virginity to premarital sex.

And that doesn't mean that God wouldn't have forgiven her for doing so if she'd genuinely repented, for God would forgive her quite alright, however He wouldn't be able to choose her to become the mother of Jesus, because the mother of Jesus was meant to be a virgin until marriage.

So that's how Mary could have missed out on the exclusive blessing and privilege of carrying the only begotten Son of God in her womb.

But thank God, she didn't lose her virginity to premarital sex, as she had preserved it until the day of her marriage, hence was she able to partake of that exclusive blessing of God that no other woman ever had:

Luke 1:28 (KJV)

28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

So Mary was called "highly favored" and "blessed amongst women" by the archangel Of God, because the kind of blessings and favor she had received from God was a very high one, which no other person could ever have. But she wouldn't have gotten such a blessing and favor from God if she hadn't preserved her virginity to her marriage, to show that there are some extent of blessings and favor that only those keeps their virginity till marriage have a chance of partaking of.

And that instance of Mary was just an illustration, for this message is not just meant for the women, but also applies to the opposite sex, because I myself preaching this message, am not a woman, but yet my greatest regret in life, is not being like Mary and those who were able to preserve their virginity till marriage.

And don't tell me that God had forgiven me of all my sins because I very well know that and am eternally grateful for that, but why it's yet a regret to me is that i am not going to be able to get back my virginity which I lost. Because virginity is the only thing that can never be recovered when lost to the devil. And that is exactly what happens whenever one loses his virginity to premarital sex.

So even though I have given my everything to God, it still pains me that I couldn't give God my virginity and use it to glorify Him, and that it is with the devil.

What makes it pain me the most is that God really tried for me, because even when I was just a church goer, and wasn't yet saved, there were glaring signs that God was trying hard prevent me from defiling myself. So despite being a ladies guy, and having a best friend was a womanizer, I was still a virgin, as God somehow was just putting spanner in all my plans and efforts to lose it.

But then I wouldn't listen, as I kept trying to taste the thing that my friends had been saying was so sweet, and made me feel I was really missing out on, so God eventually removed His Hand and let me have what I so craved. And to be honest when I finally did, I was like, "Was that it?"

And what did I gain? I gained the loss of my virginity to the devil, and the worst part is that it wasn't too long after that, I repented and surrendered my life to Jesus. So I was that close and about twenty one years old. Aarrrgghh!!!

It was after I began to walk with God that I got to realize why God tried so hard to help me preserve my virginity, but by then it was already too late for the deed had been done.

So although I'm now walking with God at the level of Spirit, where it is all about God, and by the signs God is still going to use me to a rare degree for the work of His kingdom, i am not going to forget that I lost my virginity to the devil, for that is a regret that i'm going to live with for the rest of my life.

That is actually one of the things which inspires me to do everything I possibly could to ensure that the devil doesn't have anything else of me, and that he so dearly pays for the evil he has inflicted upon mankind. So that regret does help to keep me on my toes, because I have already lost my virginity to the devil, so I can't afford to lose any thing else.

Moreover since I lost my virginity to the devil and can't get it back, I am going to do everything I possibly could God helping me, to ensure that the devil loses as many virginities as possible to God.

Therefore this message is for those who yet have their virginity in their hands, even if they haven't yet repented and are not saved.

You have an opportunity to give God something I couldn't give to Him, so don't waste it. Because everything else you lose to the devil now while you're still unsaved, you could possibly recover once you're saved, but once you lose your virginity to the devil, it is gone forever, because you would never be able to recover it.

Therefore ensure that regardless of what you lose to the devil while yet in the world, that you don't lose your virginity. So that when you eventually come back to God who is your heavenly Father and your Creator, you would still be able to glorify Him with your virginity, which is something I'm not able to do myself, but may have been very different if someone had told me what I'm telling you.

And I'm not saying that It's not going to be easy, but what I'm saying is that with God nothing shall be impossible, so that with God's help you surely can.

God bless.
These people will wake up o grin cheesy

Why not?

God chose Moses to convince a stubborn Pharoah (Stammerer Moses)
God chose Abraham to be the father of nations (Menopausal Abraham)
God chose David as the successor to Saul (Herdsmen David)
God chose even Rahab to help the Israelites (Prostitute Rahab)
God chose Paul to teach us (Persecutor Saul)

(words in bracket are what critics will tag them as)

Jesus chose fishermen, dined with tax collector and even mostly criticized the rich and "holiest" in the society

Infact from experience God uses the most unexpected. The God who uses the basket to fetch water to the disappointment of the bucket. That's the God I serve.

Do you sincerely believe that Mary got pregnant without sexual intercourse?

1. [Redacted]

2. Do you know the punishment for adultery at that time?

3. Do you know the distinction between the hebrew words "Alma" and "Betulah"? - Please do your research - Alma - which is mistranslated "virgin" actually means "young woman" - this is therefore an error of translation which has led to this misconception. The word "Betulah" is what actually refers to a virgin and this is not used with respect to Mary. The thing is that young women were generally expected to be virgins at that time.

4. Lets imagine you do not have sex with your wife for a year and she turns up pregnant. She tells you an angel appeared to her and the pregnancy was as a result of the Holy Spirit poking her. Will you believe this bro? Be honest - What will be your response, if no be slap?

I was grappling with this concept after reading.

God still used immoral and undeserving people to prove his points so is this argument not circular?

But since the question is about Mary in particular, her own particular path in life was tied to being a virgin, among other things.

How will you know what blessings you missed if you don't keep the law? That God redeems people when they fail doesn't mean they actually have license to indulge their failures.

This is what people who are insulting the OP refuse to understand. See how they're flaring because of a simple message.

Because God will still use non-virgins, that's why nobody should be encouraged to remain chaste right? Smh
My dear sister, the whole concept of Mary's virginity is totally misconceived. Na lie. Na fabu - arising from babanla mistranslation. Please read -

In the same way that in the English language the words “young woman” does not indicate sexual purity, in the Hebrew languagethere is no relationship between the words almah and virgin. On the contrary, it is usually a young woman who bears children. The word alma only conveys age/gender. Had Isaiah wished to speak about a virgin, he would have used the word betulah1 (בְּתוּלָה) not almah. The word betulah appears frequently in the Jewish Scriptures, and is the only word – in both biblical and modern Hebrew – that conveys sexual purity.

Some people argue though that the translation of the word almah in Isaiah 7v14 is not virgin but maiden. The translation of the Hebrew bible to Greek about 200 years before christ may have translated it as virgin. That is their arguement, and l don't know enough yet to refute it, but someone here who is familiar with this arguement should bring in his/her own perspective.

Either way Merry Christmas to you all.
The word translated as virgin is Almah. This is a mistranslation as Almah simply means "Young Woman."

Almah (עַלְמָה ‘almāh, plural: עֲלָמוֹת ‘ălāmōṯ), from a root implying the vigour of puberty,[1] is a Hebrew word for a young woman of childbearing age.[2] Despite its importance to the Christian tradition of the virgin birth of Jesus, scholars agree that it has nothing to do with virginity.[2] It occurs nine times in the Hebrew Bible.

Mary did not choose herself to be the 'mother' of Christ. And she definitely was not the only virgin
in town at that time.
She must have lived a life totally
concecrated to God for God to have deemed her worthy. One can be a virgin and live a frivolous and ungodly life, ask the five foolish virgins.
And she was the only virgin who lived a life totally concentrated on God?

It was God's plan. However, Mary had a choice to make. Let it be done to me according to your word....it was this response that sealed it
So, she accepted a message which was very difficult to comprehend
Nothing about God's plan is accidental. Moreover, the conception and birth of the saviour of the world is not expected to follow the usual process, hence the name Immaculate Conception
You thought about Immaculate Conception is wrong. Immaculate Conception is not about Jesus Christ but about Mary herself. She was conceived without the sin of Adam & Eve at her mother's womb

The prophecy never referred to a virgin, it referred to an Almah - which means young woman.

Yes and he almost dumped her when she found out she was pregnant.

So she still had to take a lot onto her shoulders as "wife of Joseph" that a lot of other women wouldn't have liked to risk that kind of embarrassment for.
It could have been any other lady and Joseph will still listen to the angel.

Joseph was just a normal Jew from the tribe of David. He was not even special.

I think you are missing a few things in your original post.

1) Mary's virginity was nothing extraordinary in that culture and age. The vast majority of unmarried Jewish young women in those days were virgins. So, in a general sense, her sexual purity was a given and not a qualifier.

2) The major reason Jesus was ordained to be conceived by a virgin via the agency of the Holy Ghost was for one reason and one reason alone: To escape the ancestral paternity and natural heredity of the genes of the First Adam. .

He was not tainted by, nor did he inherit the original sin. That's why he had to come through a virgin so that his birth would not be by the will/sperm of man but by the word and power of God. This is what qualified him to take away the sins of the world. His bloodline was pure.

Unlike every other person that has ever been born or will ever be born into the earth, Jesus did not inherit the original sin of Adam. He had no sin or blemish whatsoever. He was just like that sheep that took the place of Isaac on the mountain.

3) Another reason Mary was chosen (in addition to the sovereign mercy and providence of God) was because of her lineage. Both she and Joseph were descendants of David. And God made a vow to place the eternal king (Jesus) on the throne and dynasty of David forever. This is why Jesus is called the Son of David, and the One who holds the Key of David.

Yes, I have seen that but my point is still valid.

Having a child out of wedlock doesn't mean that you're consigned to the dustbin but it doesn't mean that people who try to give birth in the order that God ordained should be derided.

People here keeping saying "God can use anybody" as if people who try to do the right thing are stupid.

Virgin or young maiden or whatever, pointing out a good quality in another person shouldn't make you flare and jump up to rubbish it unless you have an unresolved issue within yourself.

It looks like inferiority complex if you ask me. That you failed somewhere doesn't mean everybody should fail too so that you will feel better.

Mary the mother to Christ been chosen by God, was not basically she was a virgin, though a credible virtue. She was a spiritual person, her conversation with angel Gabriel and her aunt Elizabeth, the mother of Jesus cousin John the baptizer, showed her in depth knowledge of the scriptures, which she quoted to buttress her point. Luke 1:46-55.
