sonofElElyon:In the original text, the word used was almah which can mean any of young woman, maiden, virgin. And not necessarily virgin. If Isaiah had used the word bethulah then, there would be no question about whether Mary was a virgin or not. And you are wrong to say that only a virgin could have given birth to the Savior. The truth is that God could have used anyone. The keyword is not virginity, but God's favor. Supposing Mary was a virgin, it would be hard to believe that she was the only virgin in Israel at that time. The only difference between Mary and other virgins was that Mary found favor in the eyes of God. If God could use a pagan king (Cyrus) and even called him My Anointed , then God can use anyone for His work as long as that person has found favor in the eyes of God. For instance, the Jews did not expect that God would send the Messiah into the home of a common carpenter when there were families of wealthy Pharisees, Saducees and Scribes in Israel. But, man is not God. The ways of God is totally different from the ways of men. That is why He is God. |

jesusjnr:That is how the Bible lied to you and we were told woman was created out of man, only to find out through science that the y chromosome in man is a genetic defect of the X chromosome in woman, by it having less of about 2% genetic material. The oldest living being is known as Lucy. Does Lucy sound like a man or woman’s name? Or you think the names, Mother Nature, Mother Earth, Mother Land, Mother of all storms etc just popped out of nowhere. What do you think the Bible meant by virgin? and no, it does not mean a woman that has never had sex before. |

jesusjnr:Do you sincerely believe that Mary got pregnant without sexual intercourse? 1. [Redacted] 2. Do you know the punishment for adultery at that time? 3. Do you know the distinction between the hebrew words "Alma" and "Betulah"? - Please do your research - Alma - which is mistranslated "virgin" actually means "young woman" - this is therefore an error of translation which has led to this misconception. The word "Betulah" is what actually refers to a virgin and this is not used with respect to Mary. The thing is that young women were generally expected to be virgins at that time. 4. Lets imagine you do not have sex with your wife for a year and she turns up pregnant. She tells you an angel appeared to her and the pregnancy was as a result of the Holy Spirit poking her. Will you believe this bro? Be honest - What will be your response, if no be slap? |

midnighter:My dear sister, the whole concept of Mary's virginity is totally misconceived. Na lie. Na fabu - arising from babanla mistranslation. Please read - In the same way that in the English language the words “young woman” does not indicate sexual purity, in the Hebrew languagethere is no relationship between the words almah and virgin. On the contrary, it is usually a young woman who bears children. The word alma only conveys age/gender. Had Isaiah wished to speak about a virgin, he would have used the word betulah1 (בְּתוּלָה) not almah. The word betulah appears frequently in the Jewish Scriptures, and is the only word – in both biblical and modern Hebrew – that conveys sexual purity. https://outreachjudaism.org/alma-virgin/ |

Daejoyoung:The word translated as virgin is Almah. This is a mistranslation as Almah simply means "Young Woman." Almah (עַלְמָה ‘almāh, plural: עֲלָמוֹת ‘ălāmōṯ), from a root implying the vigour of puberty,[1] is a Hebrew word for a young woman of childbearing age.[2] Despite its importance to the Christian tradition of the virgin birth of Jesus, scholars agree that it has nothing to do with virginity.[2] It occurs nine times in the Hebrew Bible. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Almah |

femi4:The prophecy never referred to a virgin, it referred to an Almah - which means young woman. Betulah, is the Hebrew word for virgin, and that word was never used with reference to Mary. |

Olodo24:If Mary's virginity is a fairytale then tell us the true tale. What you do not understand you should not condemn. If Mary did not have a choice God would not have sent her an angel to ask her consent. God created us all but we all have responsibility for our actions, omission and commission. |

midnighter:It could have been any other lady and Joseph will still listen to the angel. Joseph was just a normal Jew from the tribe of David. He was not even special. When the appointed time for Jesus to be born reached, the seed of David and his wife was selected. Thats all. What matters is only JESUS. |

I think you are missing a few things in your original post. 1) Mary's virginity was nothing extraordinary in that culture and age. The vast majority of unmarried Jewish young women in those days were virgins. So, in a general sense, her sexual purity was a given and not a qualifier. 2) The major reason Jesus was ordained to be conceived by a virgin via the agency of the Holy Ghost was for one reason and one reason alone: To escape the ancestral paternity and natural heredity of the genes of the First Adam. . He was not tainted by, nor did he inherit the original sin. That's why he had to come through a virgin so that his birth would not be by the will/sperm of man but by the word and power of God. This is what qualified him to take away the sins of the world. His bloodline was pure. Unlike every other person that has ever been born or will ever be born into the earth, Jesus did not inherit the original sin of Adam. He had no sin or blemish whatsoever. He was just like that sheep that took the place of Isaac on the mountain. 3) Another reason Mary was chosen (in addition to the sovereign mercy and providence of God) was because of her lineage. Both she and Joseph were descendants of David. And God made a vow to place the eternal king (Jesus) on the throne and dynasty of David forever. This is why Jesus is called the Son of David, and the One who holds the Key of David. jesusjnr: |

Righteousness89:So u mean God forces his plans down our throats? Wow!! Anyway, my Bible tells me different. Luke 1:38: Then Mary said: “Look! Jehovah’s slave girl! May it happen to me according to your declaration.” At that the angel departed from her From that scripture, it is clear Mary had to accept God's proposal. In other words, she had the option to reject it. Stop spreading falsehood |

GrayBeard:Yes, I have seen that but my point is still valid. Having a child out of wedlock doesn't mean that you're consigned to the dustbin but it doesn't mean that people who try to give birth in the order that God ordained should be derided. People here keeping saying "God can use anybody" as if people who try to do the right thing are stupid. Virgin or young maiden or whatever, pointing out a good quality in another person shouldn't make you flare and jump up to rubbish it unless you have an unresolved issue within yourself. It looks like inferiority complex if you ask me. That you failed somewhere doesn't mean everybody should fail too so that you will feel better. nB "you" here is an impersonal "you", not that I'm necessarily aiming my post at you |

Mary the mother to Christ been chosen by God, was not basically she was a virgin, though a credible virtue. She was a spiritual person, her conversation with angel Gabriel and her aunt Elizabeth, the mother of Jesus cousin John the baptizer, showed her in depth knowledge of the scriptures, which she quoted to buttress her point. Luke 1:46-55. More on her read the book "Imitate their faith" free to download at jw.org |
