My Over Zealous Subordinate. by hismerhill(m): 6:01pm On Dec 26, 2019 |
I just got a job not less than few weeks ago as a facility manager in a private firm. On resumption i started hearing a lot of the atrocities and inhumane act the former manager did before he was eventually laid off. I am not in a position to judge him but i beleive in all fairness to him many people can not be lying against you at different time and venue repeating the same thing with varied individual experience and encounter. My subordinate swiftly welcomed me and did his very best in letting me know what the job entails, the kind of people to relate with, the power i wield and finances connected therewith. He is too fast but kind hearted, me on the other hand is a slow learner and i take things bit by bit before absolute comprehension that sticks forever. The problem is that he is not having any of this, he talks to me anyhow, anytime i cant effect what he has thought me, he talks too much and i am being insecured around my staffs for the fear that he might have ridiculed me in their presence which is not good for the position i am holding.. Please candid advice on how to handle him and retain my authority which should not be undermined by anyone. N.B: He has been open hearted in putting me through some technical aspect of the job, only just dat he talks alot and he is beginning to undermine my authority which is not too good for the office i am holding |

Let me give you some advice as a Manager myself. That person that was laid off might have been laid off because the whole office ganged up against him. He talks to you anyhow now, have it ever occurred to you that it might be the same attitude that brought them at loggerheads with the former manager. With time the same treatment could be given to you. To solve part of your problem. Delegate responsibilities. Call a staff meeting and let them know that if they have any personal recommendations, it should be brought to you in private, and only listen but don't fully react to what they have to say immediately, dismiss and tell the person you will get back to him concerning the issue. If he continues talking anyhow to you call him privately and tell him you don't appreciate that. But still maintain an open relationship with everyone. You never know who is going to stab your back or who is going to be your savior one day. Be very careful of office politics it's a murky water! 2 Likes |
