Those familiar with the project described it as “a success story” despite the long delay it suffered. People of Dadin-Kowa and adjoining communities said the power project will add impetus to the socio-economic development of the northern region and the country at large. Though the project was initiated a year before Nigeria’s independence, the contract for the dam project was not awarded until 1980, and the inauguration eight years later, in 1988, by then military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida. The reservoir has a capacity of 800 million cubic meters of water and a surface area of 300 square km. The dam has potential as a source of fish, but nothing serious was done on the electricity potential until recently. theenchanter:You are very wrong. 40 Megawatts equates 40000000 (40 million watts) 40 million watts converts to about 2.3million volts which is enough to power over 2 million homes. Blindersoff:40mw can't even power 100,000 homes. Electricity to household is calculated by kw/hr. If 40mw can power 2m homes, then our miserable 4000mw should be able to power the whole country, which u already know the answer to.  As i said earlier, its more of a water or irrigation project rather than power, but the power is just an added advantage, but since most of nigerians are power-starved they think of power whenever the see any mw, even if the mw stands for "micro-wave" 152 Likes 13 Shares |

Good one . . . half bread is better than none. 40MW=40,000KW. Which should power between 13,000-40,000 homes depending on consumption (assuming each home uses between 1KW-3KW, which of course would be determined by if it's urban or rural, commercial or residential, what time of the day or night). Think of the power capacity like your "I pass my neighbor" = 1KW averagely, and your 2.5-3.5KW Elepaq or Sumec Firman generator, then do simple division. 34 Likes 3 Shares |
