A father spends 1/2 of his income on clothing for the family, then 1/8 on presents at xmas and the rest on food. How much was his total income if he spends N2,400 on xmas present? How much did he spend on food ?

come on bro, you want me to do all your homework too?!

if 1/8 of total income is 2400, then its obvious that 2400x8 would be the total income

Let total income be T
1/8 of Total income (T)=amount spent on present
1/8 xT=2400
T/8=2400
T=8×2400
T=19200
Thus total income is #19200

Amount he spent on food =food fraction x T
Food fraction =1-½-⅛=½-⅛=⅜
Amount spent on food=⅜x19200=#7200.

Thanks for the mention sir.

After spending on cloth,for the remainder:

1 - 1/2 = 1/2 ( remainder after taking out cloth)

After spending on X-mas present, remainder is:

1/2 - 1/8 = 3/8 ( remainder after taking out x-mas presnt)

Therefore, 3/8 is left for Food.

His total income?

But on X-mas prst he spent 2,400

Hence to get the total

1/8 of X( total income) = 2,400 (amt spent on x-mas prst)

1/8 x X = 2,400

X = 2,400 x 8 = 19,200

His total income is #19,200.

The amount he spent on food?

The fraction on food is 3/8 ( after taking out cloth and x-mas prst)

then 3/8 of the total income = amt spent on food

3/8 x 19,200 = 7,200

He spent #7,200 on food

I have different answer..
Total income is N38,400 and N16,800 was spent on food

I don't want to agree with this..
Read the question again..
1/2 of his income was spent on clothing for the family,
THEN 1/8 on presents at xmas and the rest on food.

If the total income is represented as x,
Then for presents at Xmas,
⅛ of (x-½x) = 2400,
⅛ × x/2 = 2400,
x/16 = 2400,
x = N38,400
Re: Please Help Me Solve This Mathematics Question by peppo4live: 3:36pm On Dec 30, 2019
Solution

Clothing = 1/2
Xmas. =1/8
Total spending on clothing and Xmas
=1/2+1/8
=5/8

Total income in fraction = 8/8
Therefore, the rest on food = 8/8 - 5/8
= 3/8

Total income if he spends N2400 on Xmas

1/8 X Total income = N2400

T/8 = N2400
Making T the subject

T= N19200

On food

3/8 X N19200 = N7200

Total income = N19,200
What he spent on food = N7,200

It says 1/8 of the income is spent on present
That sentence is a continuation of the previous phrase
So no need to be writing of income every where sir
Simple say 1/8 on present.
Clear sir?
