JOGGERS’ DIARY: Share Your Roadwork Experience by JKisOK(op): 8:36am On Jan 03, 2020
GENDER: Male

LOCATION: Ikotun-Egbe, Lagos.

TIME: 6.05 am

KIT: Shorts and T-Shirt

DISTANCE COVERED: To and fro, about 2 miles

As soon as I stepped outside the door, today’s Harmattan breeze felt and sounded like it would freeze anyone who dared to venture outside. It nearly discouraged me. Or should I just do the skipping rope?

But dressed in my usual pedal-pusher shorts and t-shirt, I walked up the street to Liasu Road. On Liasu Road, I walked and flung my arms past my head and down to the butts region. I intermixed with waist flexing right and left. I jogged for five minutes. I walked for another 5. I jogged again. I no dey deceive myself. I can’t run straight long distances.

By 15 minutes time, I lost the chill. Warmth flowed through my veins. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Thank God I dared and conquered. I continued jogging, walking, arms flexing and waist twisting.

Back home within one hour.

I usually keep N50 to N100 in my pocket, for Keke Marwa or Okada, just in case of fatigue or any other emergency. These past two years sha, I never used it. But that small cash remains in my shorts pocket.

I usually carry my lightweight “palasa” phone (never an android or iPhone), just in case of emergencies. Sometimes when I leave before 6am, I call wifey to wake up and prepare the children for school.

We pray when I return.

I saw not one of the usual school buses picking pupils. Holiday is still on in Lagos.

Those road sweepers were already out. Someone should tell their employers to give them reflective strips on their uniforms.

I met 2 fellow joggers going. When returning, I saw about 6 total. None of them double-clapped me. I was walking, not running, when they ran past me.

Do joggers in your area give the double-clap salute? Share.

Nice one.
Kindly add strength-training to the mix. Won't you like to have those pieces of nce-looking muscles slabs attached to your bones.

Saturday is a road- walk day for me.

Good thing you started this! Here is mine

GENDER: MALE

LOCATION: Arab Road, Kubwa, Abuja

TIME: 6.00am

KIT: Juventus Shorts and Tshirt

DAY: 28/12/19

DISTANCE COVERED: About 13km, to and fro :Arab Junction to Goshen Montessori.

My alarm goes off at 5.30am, but I am always too lazy, so I snooze till 5.45am. Quickly brush my teeth cos I might meet Miss. Right on my path grin.

The Harmattan seem to be on steriods but I know it will be for a time before warmth kicks in. I've got an arm band where I stash my key and phone. Also got my bluetooth earpiece because I just can't do without music. I hit shuffle on Spotify and it landed on 'Gbas Gbos' by Fireboy, lol, the song fired me up.

I usually start my slow with hip movements, followed by the swinging of my arms back and forth. Arab Road is usually dead at this time, just a few early risers and runners. 15 minutes into the run, I see 'Mr. Green Shirt' (he always wears that shirt) - very consistent guy. He recognizes me too, I guess he calls me 'Mr Ash shirt' cos I always wear an ash shirt grin. We do the ceremonial double-clap always and today was no exception.

I was thinking off turning right from Liberty junction towards the train station but I decided to stick to my normal route. I continued to Dantata Estate as the day began to brighten and other runners were trooping out. I saw another consistent guy 'Mr. Tight Pants', this guy wears a black tight which is kind off disgusting for man. I do not wish to see any male buttocks and I know other runners feel thesame way. He recognizes me but we do not double-clap - I guess we do not like each other.

At 7.45am, I arrived home and took a hot shower. Emeka, the guy next door is up too, cos Oliver de Coque is blasting from his angle.

A good Saturday Morning!

Wow, 13 kilometres! You are out of my league. Or did you mean 1.3 kilometres?

Good to see the double-clap is a universal language.

I know Kubwa. I sometimes lodge in Algos Hotel owned by Senator Smart Adeyemi. I know the train station too, which is virtually opposite the hotel.

By the way, funny and witty narrative you have put together.

Ohh! I just checked Google now. It's about 5km

I know Algos. Never knew it was owned by Sen. Smart. I sometimes take that route off Arab road.

LOCATION: National Stadium, Lagos.

TIME: 8.25 am

DISTANCE COVERED: Zero

I could not do roadwork today because I had to drop off an in-law's family holidaying with us before 8am at Ojota Garage. They were returning to Ondo State. A church programme was to start at 9am in Surulere, meaning I had time to kill.

So I decided to visit the National Stadium. I used to be a stadium regular growing up in the 80s. Getting there this Saturday, I am wowed.

I was like Alice in Wonderland! Everywhere was filled with fitness freaks. Men and women, boys and girls of all ages and shapes in their thousands played in different angles and sites of the main bowl. Jogging. Walking. Football. Boxing. Karate. Dancing. Hopping Press-Ups. Cycling. Tennis. Skipping. And more.

Maybe because I hit the roads late, 6.45am, I saw people jogging with their dogs. The sun was already up, throwing that lazy light upon the earth. I saw about three joggers running with chained dogs. I reckon they were Alsatians. Actually, only two were running with their owner- joggers, one was strolling in company of other sports-kitted guys.

I was wondering who, between the dog and the man, would be the pacesetter. Do dogs get tired running?

I have my jog-and-walk-but-no-stopping style. And I flex my arms and twist my waist.

On the return trip, I felt this pain on the left side of my chest. Could it be my heart or a strained muscle from the flexing of my arms? Subsequently, I stopped running –one advantage of jogging alone, you have no one to answer to, just yourself. I can't come and kill myself.

But I guess it was just a chest muscle strain. I later picked up trotting interspersed with walking.

OH, WE LOST A JOGGER LAST MONTH

From somewhere in Mowe, Ogun State, we had this sad story.

This man, usually busy with office work throughout the week, had a free Saturday, so that morning he went jogging. But by the time he returned, the wife noticed he was restless and breathing uneasily. She quickly called their Assembly Minister, Pastor David, my friend, who lived close by.

This one came and prayed for 5 minutes and immediately offered to follow the man to the hospital.

The man shook off the suggestion. He said he would lie down for a few minutes before taking his bath and going to the hospital.

Pastor David said they should call him so when he would up so he would accompany the man to the hospital. Not long after, Pastor David received a alarming phone call from the wife. He rushed to the house once more.

They tried everything possible, but the man never woke up. He had died in his sleep.

Was there a way out? Could this death have been avoided?

We really would appreciate the views and counsel of experienced joggers, therapists, coaches and medical personnel on this.

It is said that the moment you begin to feel light-headed, have breathing difficulties, you must stop all form of exercise for some minutes. You are to find a shelter and sitdown.

Aerobics can be dangerous because sometimes the body has issues regulating blood pressure during and after exercise. Trained athletes are known to pass out sometimes.

I'm no doctor, but in his case, it could be that the heart could not regulate back to normal, hence, the restlessness and difficult breathing.

I really wonder how many so-called joggers, athletes and exercise freaks know this "First Aid" precaution. Many just hit the road just because others do it and just because they want that dream body. I have always felt that life is first and foremost. And this is the reason I stopped the habit ofhave leaving home to jog at 5am -for security reasons! The streets are dangerous and a little wisdom helps.

What is the use of keeping fit if you only end up dead, hospitalised or kidnapped?

And as a commonsense rule, I rarely ever jog on the road, except to skirt round an obstacle.

Dimgba Igwe, a Director of The Sun newspapers, jogging on the road, was killed in Lagos in 2004 by a hit-and-run driver.

For such a reason, I normally use the sidewalks -for safety reasons! The sidewalk breaks my stride, slows my speed, but I am accident-proof and I am SAFE!

This is true. To be fit, you first have to be alive.
Another advice is facing the traffic when jogging, because on Saturday mornings a lot of drunk drivers are heading home after a Friday night of drinking.

INTEGRATED HEALTH: RUNNING AND JOGGING INJURY PREVENTION

There are four periods of time when runners are most vulnerable to injury.

Most running and jogging injuries are caused by recurring factors that runners and joggers can often prevent or avoid:

What causes running injuries?

There are four periods of time when runners are most vulnerable to injury:

--During the initial 4 to 6 months of running

--Upon returning to running after an injury

--When the quantity of running is increased (distance)

--When the quality of running is increased (speed)

Training errors are the most common source of injury, particularly lack of adequate stretching; rapid changes in mileage; an increase in hill training; interval training (going from slow speeds over long distances to faster over less ground); and insufficient rest between training sessions.

Running and Jogging Injuries

Runners should also keep in mind potential anatomic abnormalities:

--Hip disorders typically manifest themselves as groin pain. Back discomfort that radiates down the leg is cause for referral to a sports medicine specialist.

--The patella (kneecap) is a common site of overuse injuries that can benefit from a 20 minute ice massage, a program of stretching and strengthening of the hamstring and quadriceps muscles, and a short course of an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication. Surgery is rarely indicated.

--Ankle laxity can lead to frequent ankle sprains and pain. Beneficial treatment includes muscle strengthening to increase stability, shoe modification to alter gait, and change of a running surface. Foot problems in runners are related to foot.

How are running injuries treated?

The basic approach to treating running injuries includes rest or modification of activity to allow healing and reduction of inflammation. To avoid overuse injuries, or to allow for a safe return to running after a break, a runner should follow the 10 percent rule (limit the increase in weekly mileage or pace by 10% per week). Thus, if you are running 10 miles per week and want to increase your training regimen, run 11 miles the next week, and 12 miles the week after that. This program should be followed while flexibility, strength, and endurance are restored. When severe pain, swelling, loss of motion, and/or other alterations in running form are present, immediate medical treatment is advised (see reverse for specific injuries).

Cross-training can be extremely beneficial to the runner in times of recovery from injury or when starting out a running program. This may involve swimming, aqua jogging, stationary bike, or any other low impact activity that helps build endurance. Start with a higher percentage of low impact activities and then increase your mileage while decreasing the cross-training activity.

The goal of rehabilitation is to safely return the runner to the desired level of running. Remember, training errors constitute the most common cause of injuries. A well-planned program prevents injury while benefiting the athlete.

Prevention running/jogging injuries:

When selecting a running shoe, the athlete should look for a style that will fit comfortable and that will accommodate his or her particular foot anatomy. When a shoe’s mileage exceeds 500–600 miles, it should be replaced.

The ideal surface on which to run is flat, smooth, resilient, and reasonably soft. Avoid concrete or rough road surfaces. If possible, use community trails that have been developed specifically for jogging and running. Hills should be avoided at first because of the increased stress placed on the knee and ankle.

During warmer, humid weather, increase fluid intake; in cool weather, dress appropriately. It is often helpful to weigh yourself before and after running on a hot, humid day. One pint of water should be consumed for every pound of weight lost. Avoid running during extremely hot and cold temperatures or when the air pollution levels are high. When running at higher altitudes, the runner should gradually acclimate to the lower oxygen levels by slow, steady increases in speed and distance.

CO-RUNNER-VIRUS! CHINESE MARATHON RUNNER RACKS UP 31 MILES BY JOGGING AROUND HIS APARTMENT DURING CORONAVIRUS QUARANTINE

Co-runner-virus! Chinese marathon runner racks up 31 miles by jogging around his apartment during coronavirus quarantine

A Chinese marathon runner trapped in his apartment because of the coronavirus has revealed how keeps fit by running around his tiny apartment.

Health therapist and amateur marathon runner Pan Shancu from Hangzhou in the eastern Chinese province of Zhejiang, is using the small space in his flat to keep fit during the quarantine.

As part of his routine, he is repeatedly running around two tables and the short length of his hall and balcony - and he has covered 31 miles so far.

As China reels from the coronavirus outbreak that has infected thousands and spread to several countries around the globe, citizens are staying indoors as much as possible to avoid contact with other people.

According to Pan, who has a marathon best of two hours and 59 minutes, he recently ran 6,250 circuits in one of his rooms.

He wrote on social media: 'I have not been outside for many days, but today I could not bear sitting around anymore.

'Let's run laps around the two massage tables in the room then! Yes, one lap is about eight metres (26 feet) and I ran 50 kilometres (31 miles), I did it in 4:48:44. I am sweating all over, feels great!'

He explained that he considers his neighbours while exercising, saying that he runs as softly as possible on the floor rather than stomping his feet.

A social media user commented: 'I thought it was just me doing this crazy indoor running!'
