TIME TO DECLARE A STATE OF EMERGENCY ON ENUGU STATE UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL, PARKLANE, ENUGU.
By
Comr. Omeje Nnamdi

There is no gainsaying the fact that health is wealth. Unfortunately, many poor people find it difficult getting adequate medical attention in our clime today, because of the abysmal state of our health system. This is the situation with the medical services rendered at the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, Parklane, Enugu, Enugu State (Parklane Hospital Enugu).

It is sad to note that some vital medical equipments in Parklane Hospital Enugu are either malfunctioning or not functioning optimally. This unfortunate development has kept exposing the not-too-rich members of Enugu State who cannot afford medical attention in private hospitals and overseas, to a frustrating condition. Similarly, I make bold to state that many medical personnel of Parklane Hospital Enugu, do not carry out their duties in a professional manner. This, I reasonably suspect may be occasioned by the absence of adequate remuneration by the Government for the services rendered by health professionals in Parklane Hospital Enugu and/or an attempt to sabotage the workings of Parklane Hospital Enugu for the purposes of projecting and promoting private business interests of the medical personnel of the Hospital.

I am in the know of the predicament of a close relative in the hands of the staffs of Parklane Hospital Enugu of recent. The Nigerian citizen who is of a humble background, approached the management of Parklane Hospital Enugu based on a medical referral in order to undergo medical examination for a suspected case of breast cancer. It took about a period of 2 weeks for it to get to the turn of the relative to be accorded medical attention by the authorities of Parklane Hospital Enugu, only for the sad news to be passed across to her, to the effect that the CT Scan equipment of Parklane Hospital which was to be used for the medical examination developed a fault. One would be left to wonder why medical equipments in Parklane Hospital Enugu will not be enough to meet the needs of a reasonable number of people at a given time.

The Government of His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Dr. Lawrence Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, should declare a state of emergency on Parklane Hospital Enugu. There should be a dispassionate appraisal of the quality and quantity of medical facilities and personnel in Parklane Hospital by unbiased citizens of high integrity, who are to be appointed to carry out the envisaged sensitive task. Some questions are to be looked into, in order to get to root cause of the abysmal medical services rendered at Parklane Hospital Enugu.

Are these medical equipments in good state? Are they adequate to meet the medical needs of the citizenry? Are the medical personnel of this State-owned medical establishment adequately motivated and remunerated for the services they render? Are there cases of sabotage/abdication of responsibility on the part of the management of the hospital? These, among others, are some of the issues that should be looked into as a matter of urgency. The Government of Enugu State has a constitutional duty to protect the lives of the people of Enugu State. This duty to protect the lives of Ndi Enugu, extends to putting in place a functional and well-equipped hospital wherein the members of the society, who are of modest means, can receive high quality medical attention.

The citizens of Enugu State have to live firstly before they can enjoy other dividends of democracy, professed to be availed the people by the Government. Anything short of attending to this demand to scrutinize the manner in which medical services are rendered in Parklane Hospital Enugu, will imply that the Government of His Excellency Rt. Hon. Dr. Lawrence Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi is comfortable with the poor medical services rendered in Parklane Hospital Enugu.

Comrade Nnamdi Omeje
State Chairman, GDPN, Enugu State Chapter.
