Many Nigerians have been misled to think that the Nigerian civil war was caused by Ojukwu. Some have even come to believe that Ojukwu just got up one day and took up arms against Nigeria. Nothing could be further from the truth Some people may not know that Ojukwu tried to avoid war but was left with no alternative. Ojukwu did three things to avoid war. Reconciliation:- After Gowon came to power, there was a nationwide massacre of Igbos, particularly in the North. Many Igbos ran back to the East with gory tales of how Igbos were being killed. Many Igbos told Ojukwu to pull them out of Nigeria since Gowon had failed to protect their lives and property. Ojukwu said no and told many of the returnees to go back to their lives in the North in the spirit of "one Nigeria". Ojukwu even escorted a large contingent of Easterners to the Northern border in the spirit of reconciliation. A few weeks later, the returnees were massacred again in larger numbers Aburi Agreement:- Despite the fact that thousands of his people were being murdered daily, despite the fact that many Easterners were calling on him to pull the Eastern Region out of Nigeria and protect his people, Ojukwu again said no. Ojukwu then risked his personal safety to travel to Aburi, Ghana, for a meeting with Gowon, to find peace and unity within Nigeria. Ojukwu and Gowon, met, discussed and reached an agreement which both men signed in front of the President of Ghana, General Ankrah. When they returned to Nigeria, Gowon broke the agreement. This forced Ojukwu to finally agree with his people and he declared Biafra Referendum:- After Ojukwu declared Biafra, the war was not to start for another 6 weeks. During that time, Ojukwu made it known to some international Journalists who visited him, that rather than fight a war, he was open to a UN monitored referendum in the Eastern Region to allow the people choose to continue with Biafra, or return to Nigeria. He was adamant that considering the genocide Easterners had suffered in the hands of Nigerians, it was wrong to keep the Easterners in Nigeria against their will. Ojukwu did all he could to avoid war, but Gowon and his Northern cohorts were hell bent on total subjugation of Nigeria. Sometimes, you just have to fight for your freedom and hope for the best. |

If Gowon had kept Aburi agreement,no body will be talking about Restructuring today. Those now making noise with restructuring, instead of standing on their feet then joined the north to kill easterns.which lead to war. |

Emmydann:That one never learns no matter how much you try to drill some points into his skull, he'd still bring them up at one time or the other. All the half baked points he raised had been discussed extensively on nairaland and he's been schooled but he'd still bring them up. Let him enjoy the 50th anniversary in peace with his lies he loves to surround himself with. |

goodnessme1:If Gowon had kept to the Aburi agreement, there would have been no war. He could not keep to the Aburi agreement for the same reason the core North will never allow Nigeria to be restructured. The North does not want anything that will put an end to their political subjugation of Nigeria and thats what the Aburi agreement did, and what restructuring will do The war was not about keeping Nigeria one, it was all about keeping Nigeria one, under the North. Ojukwu only fought to free his people from Northern domination Im just happy that Gowon lived long enough to see his "one Nigeria" become "one Nightmare" |
