Amotekun: Afenifere Accuses Tinubu Of Doublespeak by agwom(m): 6:35am On Jan 23, 2020
Yoruba leaders and other stakeholders from the southwest yesterday flayed the national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Ahmed Bola Tinubu, over his comments on the region’s recently launched security outfit, Operation Amotekun. They accused him of speaking “from both sides of his mouth.” Tinubu yesterday, who broke his silence on the establishment of the outfit, declared support for it and described it as a laudable initiative.

Tinubu in a statement he personally signed, titled, “The Public Discourse Over Amotekun”, called for dialogue in resolving the controversy over the initiative, saying the governors goofed by not carrying the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation along. He said the failure to involve the AGF was an unfortunate omission by the southwest governors which they should regret and seek to remedy.

“However, the conceptual merits and positive functional aspects of Amotekun should not be tainted by this procedural defect,” he added. He said the foundation of the country had not been put at risk with Operation Amotekun. He said that foundation could be broken by what he called the “dangerous rhetoric of those who should know better.”

Tinubu also said the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, also acted “hastily” in declaring Amotekun illegal. Tinubu said: “While the Attorney-General is a conscientious public servant, he is also human,” he said, adding, He (AGF) likely feared the failure to consult him meant that federal prerogatives were being encroached. To blame him for this conclusion would be to blame human nature itself. Though his negative reaction was understandable it was also unhelpful.”

“The best way to resolve this is still for the two sides to enter private discussions. Either the governors should seek an official but private meeting with the Attorney-General, or the Attorney-General can initiate the contact. Since Amotekun is their initiative, the governors bear the greater onus in seeking the meeting,” Tinubu said. The Pan-Yoruba organisation, Afenifere, said Tinubu had not said anything, saying he should be firm in his response. Afenifere spokesman, Yinka Odumakin in a chat with our correspondent, said: “We cannot understand what he is saying, speaking with four tongues from different sides of his mouth…even Atiku (former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar) who is not from here (South-West) was bold enough to state where he stands.

You now constituted yourself to Tanko’s apex court and dishing out judgement, verdict on this and that…to impress who? Afraid of whom? Is he (Tinubu) afraid of President Buhari? “When there was a crisis between herders and farmers, Buhari came to Ibadan and told Lam Adesina, ‘your people are killing my people.’ Oduakin said Tinubu should have kept quiet instead of throwing “tantrums” around. “But we chose to ignore all those tantrums, less, people say we’re fighting ourselves. But he cannot be a judge in this matter, he should state his position. “At a time there is a test of will between the west and the Federal Government, he should not be speaking in four tongues.”

A member of Yoruba World Congress, Chief Olawale Taofik, accused Tinubu of being political by being neutral on the issue. He said the governors cannot consult the AGF before taking a position on matters involving the security of their people’s lives and property. But the Treasurer of the Yoruba Unity Forum and chieftain of the APC, Hon. Moshood Salvador, said those attacking Tinubu were only being sentimental, saying Tinubu was absolutely right by calling for dialogue on the controversy.

The double speaking confirms that guy man has presidential ambition. He is playing safe and trying not to offend the Yorubas or the Hausas/Fulanis.

sad As a born again Christian who is meant to speak the truth at all times, i think this amoketun issue is being hypocritically blown out of proportion to expand hatred for other tribes especially the Fulanis. Why must we Christians be the brain behind the vast support for Amotekun when the Nigerian constitution is clear about the roles of the armed forces and police in the security of the country? Why must we form an ethnic militia to target fellow Nigerians when the constitution guarantees freedom of movement and doing business nationwide as long as we are Nigerians? What we fail to realize is that the south east cheering on Amotekun sees its as a synonym for their biafra agitations and they will rather support anything that will disband the relative peace and unity of Nigeria. The IPOB sympathizers will be the one to cry wolf when Amotekun starts targeting their tribesmen who commits various crimes in the south west. MURIC recently condemned the killing of a CAN pastor and sympathized with we Christians, how many Christians will condemn the killing of an imam or Muslims? Instead we rejoice when tragedy strikes them forgetting we are all humans before religion. Instead of emulating our Muslim brothers who have remained silent on this issue of Amotekun, we Christians are disturbing the cyberspace with hypocritical comments. Amotekun will never see the light of the day as long as we remain one Nigeria. It's a bad policy and a tribalistic security outfit aimed at persecuting other Nigerians. On behalf of we Christians, i condemn Amotekun. Let's learn to live in peace and harmony sad

Tinubu is one of the worst things to happen to south Nigeria.
The man is the first southern leader who openly fought a southern president.
The first southern leader who openly instigated hate against another southern tribe because of political gains
The first yoruba leader who is not standing with other yoruba leaders

Tinubu would make the worst president if given a chance

Frankly, there's nothing wrong in being ambitious; but don't do it at the detriment of the life and comfort of your people. Sadly though, Tinubu could care less about the well-being and happiness of his people. Just take a look at Lagos for instance, here's a man who has put personal ambition ahead of the progress of the state. With due respect to him, Lagos will be better off without his input.

How can you not take a bold stand for your people at a time like this? Neutrality as they always say, is a sign of weakness.

The Yorubas have had it very good in this democratic dispensation.

Produced a President, Produced a VP, and occupied very many other critical positions in the polity.

The Yorubas have played a very major part since 99.
And unlike the Ibos, they can never claim to have been marginalized in any way in Nigeria today.

The problem the Yorubas have had since the current democratic regime since 2015 is the offspring of a new political faction of the Yorubas.
I call them the PDP Yoruba faction. These "Yorubas" have consistently opposed the current Government despite benefiting immensely.

Now back to the subject of Tinubu, nobody who is sensible and unbiased would claim to NOT see both the pros and the cons of Amotekun.

Tinubu's reaction has represented the most patriotic and unbiased position out of the many public figures...

His message is simple as ABC..

Amotekun is good, but all stake holders must sit together to appreciate the possible problems that would come out of it and address these problems. SIMPLE!!!

These so called PDP Yoruba parasites under the guise of Afenifere want Tinubu to come out criticising the FG for not supporting the initiative so that they will be the first to spread the propaganda of Tinubu "disagreeing" with Buhari.

And if he does not support at all or he calls for restraint on both sides they then on him as a betrayer or a "Fulani slave"

PDP Yoruba, only a fool wouldn't see what you have beneath your mini skirts.

Tinubu's double-sided response over Amotekun is the PROOF that he really wants to be President in 2023. In a very lengthy speech with many twists and turns to confuse the listeners, Tinubu spoke for Amotekun and he spoke against Amotekun. That is the definition of Betrayal!

Tinubu is just being cautious, and supporting this will usher in a new breed of young Yoruba leaders. Reason being that the new leaders took this initiative and it succeeded without his support , it will affect his relevance.
Secondly 2023 is on his mind, he needs to thread with caution as per Hausas and National politics so that he wont be tainted ethnic bigot

Each state should set up there own security outfit. Lagos has neighborhood watch. Ogun state should set theirs and let their men cover their highways, farms and other vulnerable parts of their states. Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti also.

Tinubu trying to be diplomatic on this issue by blaming both Western Governors and AGF in order not to be quoted in future for being a sectional leader while bullion van awaiting and still saved to be use against him in 2023 by his critics and he's avoiding another one to added.
