So how then can they say the name of the state was derived from "Anam" and not from the River which predates the state?

River Anambra cannot be possibly have been derived from Anam as a town. Anam is not the most popular town around the area for the river to be named after it. It's just a coincidence that Anam sounds like Anambra.
And yes, Anambra as a state is an artificial creation of Nigerian military. It once included parts of current Ebonyi state.
