In three local government areas of Abeokuta: namely Owu, Itoko and Ilawo in Ogun state, female and male genital mutilation practice is customarily a family tradition that the female and male child, young adult and widow would experience.

It is a procedure that involves partial or completely removing the external Instruments of the female or male genital organs and a female or male that does not go through the procedure of genital mutilation is often considered as an outcast or an illegitimate child
