EARLY DETECTION IS THE KEY TO A CURE

Cancer of the cervix is one of the commonest type of cancer in women in this country. The cervix is the lower part of the uterus, that is the neck of the womb; and it protrudes into the vagina. Cancer of the cervix is a dreaded disease. However if detected early, proper treatment may give an apparent cure.

It is important for all women to see their gynaecologist regularly and report any symptoms of irregular bleeding

(a) Coitus: Cancer of the cervix is almost unknown in Nuns. It is also rare in virgins. Cancer of the cervix is more common in prostitutes. It is related to age at first intercourse and the more sexual partners the greater the risk. Excessive sperm cells are supposed to favour development cancer of the cervix, by acting as what is refered to as" a mutagen."

The married woman is 2 -4 times more likely to develop cancer of the cervix than the spinster. This is related to the practise of coitus rather than to child bearing. Cancer of the cervix is uncommon in women who had not had any children
