It is actually 45/55. I was relying on old information

There is actually no universal sharing pattern, I believe the longer a movie plays in the cinema, the lesser/higher the studio/cinema makes

I'm more in line with @mekaprime post of Box office analysis on Birds of Prey. It needs about $250-300mn to break even. And about $350mn North wards to turn profit.

It doesn't need a huge haul as $600-650mn. It's marketing and distribution and all that can't surpass $100mn(cos marketing costs etc hardly surpass production budget). A movie needs about 3x it's original production budget to break even and then make profit. So if you plus $100mn with $84mn(production budget) you get = $184mn which includes Marketing+distribution costs, and then multiply by 2. That's $368mn needed for it to be a profit.

If Shazam was deemed a box office success with a production budget of $90mn and worldwide gross of $364mn; then how is Birds of Prey with $84mn needs a $600-650mn haul?

Cos of the way Superhero movies tend to open with huge debut numbers people tend to misunderstand box office statistics ain't always black and white. What's applicable to A can't be for B. People are too used to $100mn opening weekend.

Also depending on the individual studio lobbying power or authority a studio could take up to 55-60% box office return in cinemas for North America.

Disney takes such amounts for it's mega blockbusters since it has the power to arm twist cinemas. So is for WB and maybe Universal for some of its huge IP.

For international: anything from 40-45% just as mekaprime said. I agree with his China take.

It just depends on the Studio and the Brand or IP.

WB will owe a lot of people for sure because there is no way it will break even at this stage.

but come o, for a while now. WB has been on a string of box office bombs.

RICHARD JEWELL, DOCTOR SLEEP & THE GOLDFINCH all bombed abysmally.

BIRDS OF PREY bombing makes it a quadruple of bombs on a stretch lol.

WB needs to sack at least half of their marketing team, with the strings of underperformers and flops all through 2019 from start to finish. Only Joker was it's saving Grace. That's why they marketed the hell out of it before premiere.

That jinx seems to follow up till this year. WB must be the biggest loser last year with all those epic fvvk ups.

From Godzilla, to Detective Pikachu, Doctor Sleep, LEGO MOVIE 2, The Kitchen. Heads need to roll.

SHAZAM bombed bro.

with a production budget of 100m plus advertising& marketing budget, it broke even at 250m but needed 2x that to be considered a financial success. so it needed to make between 450m & 500m to not bomb but fall short of that at 366m.

sure it generated enough profit to finance the production budget of a sequel but what about marketing and advertising budgets?

koice was actually spot on his estimates but exaggerated the numbers a little bit.

BIRDS OF PREY needs to gross at the very least 500m to be considered successful in the box market, not 600m

breaking even isn't enough and generating 50-100m profit after breaking even isn't enough either.

a high budget movie must at the very least turn enough profit to fully finance a potential sequel without having to borrow from the warchest. anything lest than that and the studio will be running a loss rather than a gain.

for instance DR DOOLITTLE had a huge budget and is expected to break even at 700m and turn a profit at 1.3b.

LOL, WB is more than movie production alone, they make money from games, merchandise also. So while the movie department might be running a loss, the other departments cover it up at the end of the year

Can any one recommend quality movies like Knives out. I want to put the office wifi into a good use.

I think we should not focus on all these numbers in the box office, its not the reason we should watch movies.
We should be more concern about the "creative success" of the movie.

The message and how the message is delivered should be what makes a movie successful.
Besides only few box office success are original ideas. Yet we never hear of the trailblazers, cos they are not fortunate enough to get funding from the mega companies.

Robert Downey Jr. talked about his top 3 movies, and none, I repeat none did well in the box office, I guess it goes to show since he is rich he is not concerned about the numbers rather its the creativity in the projects.

There's multiple tiers of box office runs;

- Profitable box office run.: Typically requires a box office of 5x-6x production budget. This is what studios are aiming for.

- Semi-Profitable: Gross is typically in the 2.5x-3.5x production budget range. Sequels tend to happen in this range, but studio will need to rely on ancillaries to cover the marketing expenses. This isn't what studios hope for.

- Non-Profitable: The film recouped its production budget and marketing expense (broke even), but unable to generate a profit, even with ancillaries.

- Typical bomb: Unable to break even.

Shazam falls within the 2nd tier. It wasn't exactly a success story but successful enough to pursue a sequel. The studio is disappointed, but not enough to cancel future plans.

BoP is in the 4th tier.

no amount of merchandise sales will plug the sinkhole WB created for itself this past few years.

just in 12 months, WB has only gained 400m out of over a billion dollars they are spent between Joker and BoP

WB finance status is in the red right now and the only thing keeping them from bankruptcy is AT&T partnership.

bro give it a rest, it's a flop already.

at this stage since release it should be breaking even but it has barely surpassed it's production budget.

it is never gonna break even talk more of raking in a profit. let's be honest with ourselves.

I think it is time I downloaded IP Man. It seems to be interesting.

I Lost My Body-

The beginning creeped me out and it got progressively weirder, but at the same time it so arresting. I have never seen an animated movie so creepy albeit intriguing, and very...fascinating. The protagonist is so dreamy, which I can so totally relate to, and also tragic. This movie is a fantasy in all totality. It is a movie of physical and emotional loss, and how the mind works in very strange ways.

The story is grim, macabre, creative and very original.

9/10

SPOILER ALERT:

One of the themes is the experience of Phantom limbs. This is the sensation that an amputee experiences that an amputated limb is still attached, so the writer is thinking: what would happen if a limb that has been amputated goes looking for the owner? It lost it's body, so it goes looking for the owner. When it finds the owner it tries to reattach itself to the body, but we know it's not possible. The writer created a tragic back story for an amputated limb using flashbacks to narrate the protagonist's pathetic life and his physical, as well as his emotional losses. Loses parents, potential girlfriend, then his hand. The hand goes back to find him, and I am pretty sure in his dreams he feels his hand is still attached, which in a way it is. The producers kept giving clues to the identity of the hand owner throughout the movie: little symbols and articles scattered all over the story that is very easy to miss.

The story is DARK and very fantastical.
