Re: How To Obtain PhD Grade by PatrickOkunima(m): 10:38pm On Mar 22, 2020
60% means 60 out of 100. Add up all your scores (course work, seminar and dissertation) and divide by the number of courses you took. If it's less than 60, you cannot go for PhD, except through MPhil.

What about the credit load of the courses?

Just calculate your CGPA, most universities accept minimum of 4.0 on a 5.0 average for PhD admission

You're right. 5.0 is A, while 4.0 is B. Anything less than 4.0, you may have a problem proceeding to PhD.

Yes, in determining the percentage, but if your CGPA is above 4.0, you're safe. You'll beat the 60% mark. Like I was told during my M.Sc., ensure you make at least B in all your courses. For every C, you must have an A to compensate for it. Your dissertation, which is 6 units, the worst you'll be awarded is a B, unless your work is very terrible.

It depend on the school and course you apply for. The benchmark is 3.50 or 60% as recommended by NUC

Hi,

You are right, most schools set a minimum weighted average requirement of 60% for PhD applicants.

Unlike undergraduate grading system which is based on grade point average (e.g. 90% = 70% in grade), the system of grading at

the postgraduate level is based on weighted average (90% > 70% in weight).

In the weighted average system (PG), the scores and course units are equally important.

To calculate your GPA or weighted average easily and quickly, you can make use of this online grade calculator we developed: https://www.superskill.com.ng/apps/grade-calculator/

We will also explain how to calculate it manually. Example: if a PG student enrolled for 4 courses (let us assume the

following course codes and units: ENG- 3 units, MTH- 4 units, CSC- 3 units, GNS- 2 units) and scored 65% in ENG, 70% in MTH,

52% in CSC and 85% in GNS.

To calculate the weighted average, we will multiply each score by its corresponding course units, and sum all the obtained

products together. Then we will divide the result by the sum of all the units of the courses.

That is, [ (65x3) + (70x4) + (52x3) + (85x2) ] / [3 + 4 + 3 + 2]

= [ 195 + 280 + 156 + 170 ] / [ 12 ]

= 801 / 12

= 66.75

Therefore, the weighted average of the assumed student would be 66.75%, and that is above the minimum PhD grade of 60%.

Regards.

I also study at college and used a lot of different ways to learn math. Recently, I started to use https://derivativecalc.com/ calculator which is a perfect solution for algebra and geometric. I started to understand it more and it's really easy to count.
