Coronavirus: Tinubu Tells FG To Suspend VAT by liljboy(op): 5:58pm On Mar 28, 2020
Amid the raging Covid-19 pandemic, All Progressives Congress stalwart, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has asked the Federal Government to stop collection of the Value Added Tax immediately.

Recall that the government of the President, Maj. Gen Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had last month increased VAT from five per cent to 7.5 per cent.

However, Tinubu said the government must reduce the sufferings of Nigerians by introducing tax cuts while the Central Bank of Nigeria must reduce interest rates

Tinubu said this in a statement he wrote in commemoration of his 68th birthday.

He wrote, “Government should announce a tax credit or partial tax reduction for companies or firms. VAT should be suspended for the next two to four months. This will help lower import costs and protect against shortages.

“We need to protect the people from food shortages and high prices. As such, we must quickly improve farm-to-market delivery of agricultural produce. Also, government should initiate a crash program to decrease spoilage of agricultural produce by construction of storage facilities in local marketplaces in and around major cities and towns throughout the country.”

I have said this since on twitter...they acted like they didn't see it. It is just common sense. I don't know if Mr president must be taught everything before making neccessary decisions...

Re: Coronavirus: Tinubu Tells FG To Suspend VAT by Eteka1(m):
If VAT is suspended, it will lead to more hardship as the Gross VAT allocations to states and LGAs which forms a big part of monthly allocations to States and LGAs will be severely affected.

Reduction in allocations to States and LGAs at this point will cause some States and LGAs to be unable to pay their workers salaries.

Re: Coronavirus: Tinubu Tells FG To Suspend VAT by seborrhic: 6:17pm On Mar 28, 2020
Not just VAT.
Stamp duty too should be outrightly removed for the duration.
Infact anything that would ease business cost should be implemented because businesses would suffer.
Then agricultural/food items subsidy should be considered,if not many would be retrenched and hunger, the type that kills, would pervade the land.
It's amazing that till this moment the FG itself has not announced any palliatives.
This is government callousness at it's peak.

The funny thing now is even if they suspend vat the prices of goods will still not come down ...I doubt suspending VAT at this point is feasible because Nigeria has never been as poor as it is under inept Buhari

Who will suspend the vat? The president and his vice are MIA, they've both gone underground for fear of corona virus. The senate have suspended activities when the US senate is still active.

They should advice people to take raw or boil garlic along with hot water before bed at night to reduce the spread. This is very effective and also consistently taking hot water at least at interval of 6 hours in a day.
