Lol. Is Ife no longer the cradle of civilization? Anthropology helps to pinpoint areas that had had the earliest of settlements from the various archeological landmarks found therein. Among all the areas Yoruba people settled, it's Osun and Kwara that has the oldest of Yoruba cultural artifacts which confirms it as the area with the oldest settlements. Yorubas in Togo and Benin were sojourners just like the parties that went down to form the Itsekiris today.
Truly languages morph overtime but there are relics that connect them hence some are classified as dialects while others are seen as sharing similar origin but not dialects. Itsekiri is not a dialect of Yoruba but Ijebu is.
Was Yoruba used to describe every Yoruba person today before the 19th century?

Do you know the cultural heritage of every Yoruba group?

Just because Oduduwa united majority of Yorubas today with the crown from Ife doesn't mean Yoruba civilization started from Ife.

The Isekiri were Yoruba groups that developed a unique culture different from other Yorubas because of influence from outside. They were influenced by Bini through the crown, Portuguese through trade, Urobo and Ijaw being neighbours..

The issue of aniomas being igbo has once again been settled on twitter with majority of Igbo's who speak the anioma dialect of Igbo arguing that they are more Igbo than their eastern brother's and sister's. I totally agree with the fact that anioma's are truly igbo's, politics aside. Here is Hon ndudi elumelu, the younger brother of Tony elumelu the CEO of UBA bank affirming his igboness on the lower floor of the National Assembly.

As an Igboman from Anioma part of Igboland.
I find this thread a little bit annoying! Why can't we make a similar thread about Afikpo Igbos, Ngwa Igbos or Nsukka Igbos saying they are proud of being Igbo? Or another Igbo group? It is clear that Nigeria's Fulani leaders agenda since time immemorial has been to balkanize Igboland beginning with carving out Igbo people at the periphery of Igboland and joining them with other groups or other states as minority there. In our stupidity, we allowed them to do it for way too long.

Every true Anioma person that didn't benefit from the politics of Nigeria or Bendel State knows we have NEVER hidden our Igboness. Of course there were a few people that were motivated by the Nigerian regime to come out and say rubbish about our Igbo ancestry in their desperation to kill Biafran unity. Those people have been relegated to the dustbin of history. Moreso, Anioma Igbos singularly paid the biggest price by the genocide of our people during the civil war. If we were not Igbos, WHY WOULD FULANI SLAUGHTER US IN OUR VILLAGES?

Again, our sons volunteered and fought bravely during the Biafran war. Nobody especially Col. Murtala Mohammed will deny their fear of Col. Joe Achuzia. I know threads like this are started by Afonjas to do their bid. But, when I see respectable monikers falling for their deceit I worry about the new generation that does not know their history.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for this post!!! I legit was clapping reading this. Scream it loud for the ones in the back room can hear it!!

Ogu or Ewe have their well documented history.

They migrated to Bsdagary their current location for security reasons. They wanted to be protected by the Oyo empire's outpost of Ajase (Port novo).

Their history is intereoven with ours and ours with them.
Lol. Ewe that's in far away Togo and Ghana wanting protection from Oyo? Chai... why do you guys lie like this? Is Eweland contiguous with Yorubaland? What year did they seek this protection and from who were they running away? Show me from any book where it was written that Ewes sought protection from Oyos.
As for the Ogus, they're a tiny minority group and were sandwiched between the Fon on the West and Yorubas on the East yet retained their language. The influence Yorubas had on them is very great but their history with the Yorubas is no way interwoven. Bear this in mind that the Ewes are not Ogus or vice versa. Ewes are found in only two countries viz Ghana(SE) and Togo(SW). You can check the map of West Africa. You language is not even similar in any way hence they're not even Yoruboid.

Thanks for the illumination.
So are the Egun people consider a different tribe in Lagos State?
It is common to see a dialect of a tribe (ethnic nation)that is kind of different from the other dialects.Maybe due to migration in time past. But in this contemporary age, they now belong to one tribe.
Egun is not a dialect of Yoruba. They are a different people entirely.

Re-read my post that you quoted carefully and you'll get my post. Archeological findings show that an area has been occupied earlier than other places. I pointed out that among all Yoruba/Yoruboid settlements, Kwara and Osun are the areas with the oldest archeological findings which confirms that they're the older settlements. How can a tiny Itsekiri territory (the smallest in Delta state without any archeological artifact be the true Yoruba origin? Highly improbable. Argue with intelligence mr man. That Nupe destroyed old Oyo(Katunga) or influenced the Yorubas there even confirms how old the settlement is. As at the the 16th century when the Portuguese visited 'Iwere'/Ode Itsekiri, the population was about 3000 people. Does it look like a birth place of the large Yoruba ethnic group?

The ijebu kingdoms were formed in 15 century 100 years before Portuguese visited Ode Isekiri.

So are you telling me that Ijebus couldn't have numbered 3000 people in Warri before Portuguese arrived there?

As for Fon people, you lie again. So Fon language is a fusion of Yoruba(Ketu) and Egun languages? You're so funny. The dominant power in Benin republic is Fon and they did war with Oyo for a longtime until they chased the Oyos away from the territory and extended their influence to the coast swallowing other tribes especially in the infamous 'Whydah' today known as Ouidah.
The Ewes were originally from the Ketu area but left when Oyos (Yorubas) put to much pressure on the area. The left to go settle in the Volta region of Ghana. While the Ogus were driven out of their original settlements in Allada and Ouidah by the Fons and they actually preferred the Oyos to the Fons.

My reference to the population of Ode Itsekiri was to prove that the Itsekiris were actually a small group and can't be the origin of the Yorubas like someone wanted to claim before.
The Ijebus arrived there and met some smaller groups of people yet the population was very small. This is still why they're the smallest in Delta state today.

Fon state of Dahomey paid homage to Oyo empire for years before the collapse of Oyo empire due to Fulani conquest and in fighting.

Ijebu never met anyone there

There's no document history of Ijebus meeting anyone there.

No other groups lived there before Jebu arrived there in 15 th century.

The Ijebu/Ilaje language is still 97% of the language spoken amongst Ishekiri today.

The 15th century was a century of migration across Africa. All the migrants today are owners of their own land.

No one ever claims Ishekiri are the origin of Yorubas.

You're the ignorant one. How can a group of Aja conquerors not be the founder of the Fon people? You want to claim that Yorubas who were defeated are partly the founders of the Fon ethnic group? Isn't it funny to the ears? Is just like saying that Fulanis who defeated the Hausa people will tomorrow be forgotten when discussing the new fused group they've become. In present day Fon territories, Abomey which was their original capital has no single Yoruba mixture. It's only in the Southern parts where they defeated Yorubas and the Ogus that you can see mixture of Yorubas.

You first claimed that the Fon was a not a inter relationship between Yorubas and Gun Aja). I disputed it with a fact that the Fon acknowledge this in their own oral tradition..

And what do you mean by Aja conquers?

Majority of the Areas occupied before the Arrival of Aja (Gun) people were tiny villages. They had no capital.

Lol. I can't lie over what is as clear as the sun. So you mean that the Aja conquerors as the page you uploaded called them are Ogu(Egun) people and the Yoruba groups merged to form the Fon people? Does it make sense to you? My point is clear that there are the original Fon people whose capital is at Abomey. They moved South and displaced/defeated the Ogus who now ran towards the Yoruba lands to the SE of Benin republic. A lot of mixture happened there and the Fons still ruled over those lands incorporating most of them to become Fons. This doesn't take away the origin of the conquering Fons originally from Tado in SE Togo. Therefore, don't ever claim that the defeated Yorubas formed the Fons. It's not true. Even the Fon language is not even close to Yoruba language. This is a further proof to the originality of the Fon language.

Is there any specific thing written like Aja conquered the Yorubas?

Or don't you know that there were other tribes in the region then..

Besides, how can Adja people (Gun)conquer Yorubas and still pay homage to Oyo empire for 100 years after they conquered Yoruba in there new kingdom?

And the Yoruba spoken in some part of Benin is not central Oyo Yoruba.

And I need to see a source that claimed Fon originated from Togo not just screen shots.

The same page from where your first uploaded pix emerged is from where this pix of mine came. The Fon people were originally known as the Aja people and they migrated in different waves. Initially, the Oyos were defeating them but later on, they defeated the Oyos and took over the other Yoruba territories in the region. They later morphed into the Fon after defeating many other tribes and incorporated them into their control. This is what I've been saying and their language was not much affected.
The Ogus are the ones that fled their original settlements in Allada and Ouidah towards the Benin/Nigerian borders during the Aja conquest.

You are arguing back and Forth while making Contradictory statement..

By the time the Dahomey was paying homage to Oyo, the Fon people already existm

Fon are not purely Adja, they have Yoruba blood and cultural practices which distinguishes from Adja because of inter marriage with Yoruba people.

Even in your map, they it is clearly stated that they are two different people. Fon depicted by Yellow and Adja by Pink.

And Fon clearly over estimated their own population in the Map because there's no large number of Fon in Nigeria or Eastern Benin republic even today.

And Fon never conquered Oyo empire but took advantage of some disagreements between the Yorubas to raid slaves in Yoruba territory and after Oyo empire collapse.

Wrong again.
By the time the Dahomey was paying homage to Oyo, the Fon people already existm[/quote]Yes the Fon people had been formed independent of absorbing any Yoruba groups as their expansion into the Yoruba strongholds in SE was very limited as at that time. The key to the formation of the Fon is with the establishment of the capital at Abomey. This capital was formed on the lands of the Gedevi (another Gun subgroup) after the the Aja Prince Dakodonu killed the prominent Gedevi Chief known as Dan. The Gedevis are not a Yoruba subgroup in the region.
However, they eventually incorporated other Yoruba subgroups after defeating them. A new culture developed with was an amalgam of the constituents group not just the Yoruba ones. The language however remained more Gun as ever.
The pix shows the Yellow tribe as the Ewes whose language I've heard first hand and is similar with the Guns but not the same more like Yoruba and Igala. The Purple indicates the Fon but actually overestimated to cover the Ogus in Nigeria. The origin of the Ogus is from the green areas.
I never said they conquered the Oyos, rather I said they defeated the Oyo army who initially had control over the region including other Yoruba groups. After the Oyos were pushed out, the Fons took control of the indigenous Yoruba groups till this day.

You are contradicting yourself

Abomey is the capital of Dahomey which Oyo controlled for two decades until about 1800s when Fulani started fighting Oyo and weakened the Empire.

Oyo had a Calvary army which was hard for anyone to confront until Fulani with similar style of warfare defeated it with the help of Afonja.

Oyo not only controlled Dahomey kingdom of Fon in present day Benin republic but also the Bariba kingdom to the North of Dahomey which is a distant Hausa cousin. The Borgu kingdom!

I have put the picture of map of the kingdom Dahomey below for you to understand

It was only after Fon a group which was formed as a result of a marriage between Oyo-lu(ketu) and Gun (Aje speakers) won back their independence that they were able to raid Yoruba villages for slaves.

And point of correction, the Fon never controlled any of the Yoruba villages..

The Likes of Idansa, Ketu, Ajase(Port Novo) still have Yoruba kings in Benin republic till today.

In fact, they protested to the French and British authority at independence when they wanted to separate Yoruba land into two countries.

Read carefully the page your uploaded again.
If the Ewes are from Ketu and the Alaketu, the ruler of Ketu, is one of the seven sons of Oduduwa, who then are the Ewes if they are not Yorubas?

How am I contradicting myself? Show me here.
You see jumping here and there will never cover up the truth. At no time did I say that Oyos didn't defeat the Fons. My point was that despite the initial defeat, the Fons still enjoined a level of control of their kingdom and only paid tribute to Oyo. This is fact in that despite being a tribute of Oyo, they will were still controlling the slave trade and export in the ports of Ouidah for their own profit. Do you contest this?
I equally stated that the Fons became divergent from the Aja conquerors after they defeated the Gedevis(original owners of Abomey) and built it to become the new capital of Dahomey. They intermarried with this people to become Fon. Gedevis are not Yorubas in any way. Do you contest this? After their success in Abomey, they head down South to conquer their brothers in Allada then they proceeded to defeat the Ouidahs and started controlling the trade at the coast. Oyo army attacked and defeated their soldiers and demanded tributes. They didn't destroy their capital at Abomey. Did they? NO. This went on for decades until a more radical king emerged to galvanize the Fons and they revolted against the Oyos and defeated them thereby taking over other Yoruba subgroups in the region.
As for Porto Novo, the history is very clear. It was formed by one of the three Aja Warriors and they've always produced the Kings (Ahosu) of the city except for few years when the Oyos were in control of the city. At present, the Fons control the city and the king is a Fon with the name Ayontinme Tofa IX. Yorubas still inhabit the city though and will refer to it as Ajase while th Fons will refer to it as Hogbonu.

Do you understand the displacement pattern of migration? This is what happened there? Can you tell me just one name shared between the Ewes and the Yorubas? They are not in any way similar. Not in language nor in culture.

You are always contradicting yourself without knowledge of what you are arguing about. tbh

Gedevi is what Aja call a certain group of Yorubas from Ketu also known as Igede. And they were never defeated by the Aja persay because there was no war. They inter married with Yorubas until a person of mix origin became the first king.

As for your submission on Dahomey tributes to Oyo.

Actually the king of Dahomey begged Oyo no to destroy the capital but the Oyo Army looted the Dahomey kingdom. The king then begged Oyo Army not to take his life in exchange to be a tribute state to Oyo which they agreed.

@ Port Novo

Your submission on Port novo further exposed your ignorance on the topic. Just like Abaomey. Guns (Aja) also migrated to Ajase (Port Novo) and Lagos but lived independently from Yorubas. However. Majority of the population are still Yorubas

Yorubas Aka Akus, Nago olukumi etc through inter marriage have managed to merged into other tribes for decades.

Some of them are

Ogori in Kogi which is an inter marriage between Ebira and Yorubas

Ishekiri which is an inter marriage between Yorubas and Edoid groups

Fon which is an inter marriage between Yorubas and Aja speakers

Ewe which is an intermarriage between Akan, Aja and Yorubas

Olukumi in Delta North which is inter marriage between Yorubas, Edoid group and Igbos.

All this point to a fact that perhaps Yoruba are one of original inhabitants of where we find ourselves today. Perhaps we didn't migrate from anywhere.
