dominique: GTBank has it's head office in Lagos The major portion of it's earnings come from Lagos (You can confirm this for yourself from their audited financial statement which can be assessed free on their website) It's only natural for GTB to donate to Lagos since this is where they make the bulk of their money and most of their staff pay their income taxes in Lagos by virtue of place of residence. ...by the way let's not forget that they also made a donation to the federal government recently. There is no basis for Dangote and BUA who have their head offices in Lagos and derive a major part of their revenue to ignore Lagos and make donations to Kano. This was exactly the same thing the deposed Emir of Kano did when he was governor of CBN - using a corporate entity's money(CBN) to donate to Kano State so as to ingratiate himself and 'clear road' so that they will make him emir! Bottom line - If you want to make a donation to your home state do it in your personal capacity and take the money from your pocket, don't force your corporate organisation to do it! |

fiizznation: I am a medical doctor working at the Accident and Emergency unit of one of the largest public hospitals in Kano. While some information being peddled by the media is not true, there is every reason to worry about Kano and it's residents. Before I left the frontline last Saturday (I tested positive for the virus on that day), we were seeing 20 - 30 suspected cases on daily basis and there was no provision for care for this category of patients. They cannot be admitted at conventional hospitals because those hospitals are not equipped to handle covid 19 and they cannot go to Isolation centers because their covid 19 status has not been confirmed. I remember referring several patients to 'other hospitals' which I am sure do not exist while others were sent home on oral medications. The deeply rooted cultural and religious beliefs are also a source of concern. I still remember the stupid and ignorant comments of some patients relatives when I tried to educate them about the need for the aged among them to stay away from the suspected cases. I don't believe in total lockdown because our cities are not as well structured as is obtained in developed countries. The lockdown in Kano is just a name. I agree with you that things are improving. Some public hospitals have created isolation units where suspected cases can be treated pending the outcome of their test results. Three additional isolation centres have been created (still not enough), and testing capacity expanded. More importantly, the federal delegation has come out clearly to say that covid 19 is related to the current increase in the number of deaths being experienced in the state unlike the state government that has been denying it. I hope things continue to improve so that more lives could be saved. May God have mercy on the souls of the departed, may He heal the sick and protect the healthy. |

4Play: Someone like Dangote probably pays his fair share of taxes. His companies are publicly listed so no hiding place. Even in 2014 or so when Dangote Cement had an annual turnover of 248b and a profit after tax of 124.8b, it was published. Import bans are very lucrative! How many companies can declare more than half their revenues as profits, talkless of P.A.T? Even online gaming companies will be eyeing the Nigerian cement market . Which business incubator did Dangote Cement spring from? Is his income still a beneficiary of rentier capitalism as he makes is money largely through influencing the government to ban the import of goods? |
Re: Abdulsamad Rabiu Donates Ambulances, 20 Vehicles To Kano COVID-19 Taskforce by 4Play(m): 8:57am On May 13, 2020 |
grandstar: You are right about Dangote paying tax but I wonder, apart from his publicly listed entities, if he does pay enough re his private companies, personal income, and capital gains. And as you point out, his profit margins are stupendous for such a capital intensive industry which is usually a good indicator of market failure and rentier capitalism. There are also claims he gets forex at preferential rates which is like a subsidy by the government: LAGOS/LONDON (Reuters) - As Nigeria grapples with a foreign exchange crisis, one person stands out in the scramble to obtain hard currency: Aliko Dangote, Africa's richest man. https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-nigeria-forex-dangote-insight-idUKKCN0Z90PT 1 Like |

Kiddler: You're not far from the truth. I studied Microbiology and biotechnology__graduated 2012, went to service 2013 finished 2014. I can tell you first hand that I have never worked as a microbiologist. I have searched and searched even resulted to trying private laboratories, guess what? They rather pick MLS over Microbiology(they fell MLS can do all things). I resulted to selling hospital/Laboratory equipment (that didn't give me satisfaction). After two years being a sales rep I went ahead for my masters.. The story continues, nobody want to employ a microbiologist (except pharmaceutical companies, they will use you as sales rep). Just recently, as this pandemic hits, I now see Microbiology and biochemistry job adverts. I'm trying to understand what went wrong in the "Microbiology/Biochemistry world" in Nigeria. How did they become so useless?? In civilized world, MLS do not ultra varies Microbiology, everyone sticks to their profession, why is it so different in Nigeria?? Las las, I will end up a lecturer and the circle continues 1 Like |
