Not really. I often see Kibera on BBC and CNN. Kibera seems to be popular in western media. I think Kenya should organize tours for international tourists to go there.

Kenya's real estate is mostly "informal". Nearly all houses you see are built by Kenyans - informally. Very few by companies, pension funds,REITIs, investment companies or insurance like you have in South Africa or developed world.

We had large scale housing project in 90s but corruption and delays became so much - most pension, insurance and such companies are either by law (RBA ) or by choice - since avoided investing in real estates.

It was only last year when gov attempted to go back - with 500,000 units promises. Not much is happening though.

The nearest to companies is SACCOS - housing Saccos - otherwise, normal kenyans are building the houses you see - but try to stick to same standards

I actually took some time to study Ghana SNIF - seem like a mix of social security and pension fund - and it's total assets are like 1.5B dollars. Folks contribute 18.5% of their salary to the thing.

Now Kenya has NSSF (social security)- really meant for poor people - everyone pays 10 dollars or less - on average - and it really meant for poor people - and their total assets is 2B dollars.

The idea behind Kenya NSSF is to gather for those without pensions. The keyword is SOCIAL security - that is why everyone in Kenya is forced to contribute 10 dollars per month.

Gov civil servants have a pension - unfounded like the US - but they pay lots of money.

Private sectors have pension fund run under RBA authority.

They do that..and resident of kibera usually complains that govt allows tourist to come mock them with a camera and sparkling white handkerchief to wrap their nose from the pungent odour emanating that unfortunate piece of land...they literally take photos of them to the point resident nag about being relegated to a human wildlife

That's really a good point because Kibera is so unique in the world. So people just came to film and take pictures there. Thanks to Kibera, Kenya became known to everyone.

So what, drive 10 minutes outside of Nairobi CBD and you are either in a national park or a forest. Nairobi is not a concrete jungle like Nigeria or Ghana, it was planned with a focus of nature in mind. Green city under the sun.

The 30 minute drive is still within your urban centres...hence why they said it is part of your urban Metropolitan sprawl..
