I agree with you here. Ability to head the ball should be a prerequisite for any Centre back especially at the highest level.
Same way goalkeepers are expected to make saves and strikers are expected to score goals. Does that mean we shouldn't praise players that excel at these things and do them better than others? VvD is the most dominant CB aerially in today's game and i don't see why we shouldn't give him props for that.

I did not play football professionally. I have not been following football for 100 years like you guys. But, if you have been following football for a long time and still think that there is nothing Ferdinand would have done there, then I can't help you.
Probably O'Shea or one of the midfielders should also take 'some' blame there, they literarily just watched Messi get into position, I think Messi and Eto switching positions created serious issues for Utd defenders.

But there was no way Fagbo would have covered 2-3 yards in 1-2 secs.

It was in their bid to rubbish VVD's defensive prowess they shot themselves in the leg, that winning aerial duel is nothing.

Look at VVD here tracking back to nod away the ball from Kane winning it.

Similar aerial ball Boathand failed to nod away and Martinez capitalised on, to score here.

I learnt that 3 Brighton players have tested positive. Is the Premier league resuming soon?

Boateng didn’t track that ball well. That’s a really poor display from a supposed top defender. It’s the kind of mistakes Lindelof used to make.
Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Club World Cup Champions 2025-2029 by Leyqute(m): 2:02pm On May 10, 2020
Heading aerial balls no be moin moin.

You have to track the ball’s trajectory and speed and then calculate where best to position yourself so you can head it. After getting into position, you have to determine how high to jump (if it will be required), what angle to connect with it and time your header appropriately.

You have to determine all these in a few seconds.

C. Ronaldo is the best offensive player that can do this. Godin, Vidic are also good at reading aerial balls.

Lindelof still makes such mistakes. I remember like three United games I watched this season that he made such mistakes (I think one resulted to a goal earlier this season).

The only thing i appreciate Boathand for, he sluggishly allowed Drogba to score that header in Munich and the idiot is taller than Drogba o.

Nitrogen and his friend, Timbros, believe once you are tall and you are a cb, heading the ball away, is nothing. grin

See Ferdinand looking like mumu. If it was VVD, you, nitrogen and ramdeuter wouldn't let us hear word.

What happened to looking over his shoulder and tracking Messi's run since he was the only threat unmarked and closer to him, before the cross?

I can give multiple gifs where VVD tracked such runs and headed the ball to safety (pro-activeness). But to you, nothing is there in nodding aerial balls away. You no know ball grin
Actually the same would have happened to VVD because like Rio he also plays avoidance football where he runs away from opponent

VVD in that position would be pointing to Matip or someone else to mark Messi and shouting on how to jump instead of doing it himself

If you look at the gif below it is the same way a similar shorter attacker beat VVD to the ball

This is how the epitome of defending actually defends

If VVD was the one in that situation, had tracked Messi's run and nodded the ball away, you would have come here to tell us no biggie in what he did, since that's what all cbs are trained to do - to win aerial duels, in fact against a midget (Messi).

Take your L peacefully.
How VVD was ball watching and the attacker went behind him to score

It's not the ability to head ball that is the issue. It's the ability to track the run of the man wishing to head the ball

How many attackers were threats to Ferdinand and how many did VVD need to deal with here?

Look for a perfect example, this one is DOA.

Look at VVD's first step, he tracked the attacker in his front. If Ferdinand was in similar situation i would also pardon him. Only one threat around him, Messi, and he still couldnt do the needful.

This gif is not perfect, look for a better one.

VVD has only been in the spotlight for over 2yrs and we can see the amount of gifs we can generate.

Imagine if he has been in the spotlight since 2006 when Ramos faced Dinho or since 2010 like Boateng

Just a little over 2years largely in Klopps protected system and we have that many receipts, Imagine if he was playing weekly in Madrid "Answer your papa name" system

One doesn't even need to play pro before one uses sense to grab it when explained.

'Look over your shoulder', is what coaches always ask cbs, when they are strangely free in the box, when the opponents are with the ball in the flanks.

Ferdinand was mumu for that goal. They call it loss of concentration.
The funny thing is that, Ferdinand saw Messi clearly positioning himself for that cross, but either laziness or tiredness made him not to attempt to go closer to Messi to do the needful. Or maybe, he underestimated Messi.
