FG To Set Up Panel On Implementation Of Oronsaye Report by Emedu(op): 9:14am On May 11, 2020
•There’ll be no job losses, says Ngige

The federal government is to constitute a presidential committee to work out ways to implement the recommendations of the Steve Oronsaye Panel on rationalisation of ministries, agencies and parastatals.

However, Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, has assured the public that the merger and scrapping of MDAs, will not lead to job losses.

President Muhammadu Buhari had ordered that the White Paper on the report, submitted in 2014, be dusted up and implemented as one of the steps to reduce governance cost in the face of plummeting revenue occasioned by the outbreak of COVID-19 and its attendant effect on global oil price volatility.

The committee, set up by the administration of former president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, recommended among other measures, the reduction of statutory agencies of government from 263 to 161.

The committee’s 800-page report had put the number of federal government parastatals, commissions, and agencies (statutory and non-statutory) in the country at 541.

From the committee’s recommendations, the number of statutory agencies should be reduced from the current 263 to 161.

However, the White Paper on the panel report, which the Buhari administration is set to implement, either rejected or merely “noted” for future consideration about 90 per cent of the recommendations.

THISDAY gathered at the weekend that the federal government was working on the next step to appoint an implementation committee to carry out the pruning.

Without job loss I support!
With Job loss I reject!

I have studied the report. 70 percent of the recommendations were rejected. What they are planning to implement is simply the water down Oransaye report. Anyway half a loaf is better than no bread.

Minister of Labour Chris Ngige is making typical Nigerian political campaign promise. It is wrong to say, straight up, that there won't be any job losses because in reality nobody can guarantee that 100% if the exercise is effectively implemented. Yes, I know some agencies will be released and given mandate to fend for themselves but even that will still require staff rationalization for efficiency and profitability. Therefore, it is better to say that job losses will be minimised as much as possible and those affected paid their adequate compensations in time to allow them settle, adjust and pursue other endeavours.

I am still wondering how they will implement without job loss, may be there are some magic they perform to absorb all the workers from the scrapped Agencies/Mda's , government should stay status quo if there will be job loss.

Level 15 upward officials ( deputy director and directors) will likely be affected. Let see how the magic will play out.

Ngige is simply playing politics with the no job loss statement. FG cannot scrap or merge MDAS without job loss. It’s impossible.

Finally, the government is making progress by taking the bold initiative by implementing the recommendation of the Oransanye's report.

How it's wished they knew from the beginning that govt is a Continuum instead of the senseless blame game of about 5years now.Meanwhile, they should not give a false assurance that there won't be job loss in the course of taking this step.

However, they should start by cutting their own allowances, heavy clusters of aides, reversal to unicameral legislation(if possible on part time basis),

You are right my brother. They are coming with the promise of no job loss to gain public acceptance.

What blame game? Jonathan sat on the Orosanye report for two years before we kicked him out. Why didn't he implement the recommendations of his own committee.

You people would always bring Jonathan into everything, but when others do, you will say they are doing blame game. Hypocrisy of the highest order!!!

Yes Jonathan goofed greatly by not implementing the resolution before exiting but you know sincerely the wicked fellas in the APC takes every of his action with senseless political opposition.

Same way the APC is refusing to restructure the Nigerian nation or fulfill many of its campaign promises which they used to aggressively campaign but rather are dancing around aimlessly.
