I have seen/heard countless bitter experiences newly weds have with incompetent photographers they had unknowingly hired to cover their wedding. I figured out that after the Covid-19 pandemic, there'd be a lot of weddings so as a professional photographer, it's wise that I do a little enlightenment to avoid stories that touch.

*Paid photographer not showing up on the day of the wedding or arriving very late
*photographer failing to deliver after complete payment
*photographer behaving so unprofessional; behaving like a tout with a DSLR
*photographers delivering very low quality and classless pictures
*photographer failing to capture the top three most essential moments of the event

A wedding ceremony is a once in a lifetime event and only a photographer has the power to preserve that memory for life. As couples who are about to wed, it's very important that proven competence and professionalism be your priority when looking to hire a photographer for your once in a lifetime encounter.

How would you feel after spending heavily to hire a faux professional photographer and the photography movies I mentioned above start replaying right after wedding? Knowing fully that every single memory of that day has been lost as a result of incompetence? It is your duty to run extensive background checks before hiring. You don't just wake up one day and hire because the guy next door told you so without running your own personal checks.

I also find it funny when couples assign a ridiculously small budget to the only thing capable of immortalizing their special day. I mean it's not like you can go back and have the day and moment all over again ooo. Let's face it, this is 2020 and no photographer would shoot your wedding for N60,000. Point is, with competence comes price. You pay for what you get. But remember this is a once in a lifetime moment so it is very important you hire a competent hand and have rest of mind. Ohh, you want mobile phone quality photos? No problem then.

Here's what you have to look out for when hiring a photographer to avoid stories that touch

*Portfolio: Very important, this is the first and most important step. You want to check if the photographer's style of work suits your taste.

*Contact: Ensure that it's easy to contact the photographer directly. Avoid third party and middle man contact. If you realise that the photographer is proving difficult to contact, kindly make contact with some other photographer. Ensure want to have multiple contact medium with the photographer. Find him/her untraceable? Kindly move on

*Physical location: Try and verify the photographer's physical location. However, be aware that some photographers do not have a studio. So do not be surprised if you are given a residential address. The point here is to have a place where the photographer can be easily found or traced to.

*Years of experience: this is a trick that works like magic. Find out the photographer's years of experience and compare it with the age of his portfolio and the quality of photographs on his/her portfolio. Sense a red flag? Quickly move on.

*Chat: Have a chat with the photographer and talk to him/her about your photography tastes. Remember you're hiring and paying so it is your right. If they photographer fails to give you answers that satisfy, you know exactly what to do.

Payment: Don't just transfer money to any photographer you are about to hire like that. Ask for document that shows the service he/she would be rendering and the amount of money being charged for the service. This is how to easily nail an incompetent and unprofessional photographer. The document (if at he/she have any) would easily give them away. Stay away from photographers that lack such documents.

*Say no to paddy paddy work. If your paddy is incompetent, cut him off and hire a competent. Bonus: that they have a DSLR do not make them a true photographer.
