Little statements like “God is with you” “We are in this together” “Everything will be okay” can go a long way in helping people overcome their depression,everyone is not as strong as you,everyone is not as financially okay as you are,not everyone is spiritually fit as you are..you just have to say nice words,I wonder if it costs anything
People post for advice on forums and you see nasty comments,some even call it fake stories,if you don’t have any advice for the person,it won’t hurt to keep quiet,no one is perfect,but there is power in what we say more than what we do,words to me speak louder than action because there is huge power in the tongue

I would unsubscribe from whatever article you read that from. As human beings our ability cope with pressure is based on our ability to bounce back from adversity. Our ability to bounce back from adversity is based on life experiences and or training. MRT 101. In my organization, we undergo this training yearly. And with all my training not once has there been talk of suicide and mental illness. Do crazy people commit suicide? Yes. But not all people who commit suicide are crazy. That should be logical na.

You are totally correct, suicide is a form of mental illness, most mental illnesses results to suicide. I know, i was a social worker with mentally unstable youths, With medications some can manage their illness.

Simple question? Do you think all people with mental illness are crazy? Do you know that almost every human being has suffered from one form of mental illness or another? Think about it, ever felt so angry you couldn't concentrate? Ever felt so sad that you couldn't eat? Ever locked yourself in a room and wonder why life is unfair? So many examples of mental illnesses that does not involve someone being crazy but rather emotional imbalance.

There is no scientific data to back that. It is just a Nigerian myth. I too heard it growing up. Thankfully i went to school and know better now. Anger and sadness are normal emotional reactions. Hopelessness and the inability to bounce back from adversity are the main causes of suicide. Not mental illness.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death in young people. A major cause of suicide is mental illness, very commonly depression.

The amount of cyberbullying that celebrities face can't be compared with any form of bullying that a non-celebrity would face.

Or isn't it Nigerians that are committing suicide because of the girl/boy-friends broke up with them, no dey too hype naija, there's nothing special about the people or the country.

Oh wow, I also worked with many social workers. I think in 9ja we only associate mental illness with crazy people so it's so hard for people to think an ordinary person can have a mental illness.

Alot of those people you see in nigerian streets nakid with over grown dirty hairs, picking rubbish up and talking, murmuring to themselves and laughing can be treated with medications, most of their illnesses started with untreated depression, the problem in nigeria is stigma, religious believes, diabolical believes and lack of mental institutional facilities. rather than treating people with mental illness caused by depressions they will blame witches/witcrafts and diabolical Jargons.

Alot of adult youths I knew went from depression alcoholism, drugs and finally suicide. but some of them survive through medications/rehabilitations and councilings, it costs the UK government millions to treat these folks. Nigerian governement are not ready to spend money on rehabs and medication hence you see able bodied men and women in nigeria roaming the streets mentally ill, it saddens my heart every time i drive past these unfortunate folks every time i am in nigeria knowing that they can be rehabilitated and medicated back to normal lives.
