Residents of Germiston in Johannesburg woke up to the gruesome sight of the body of an alleged cable thief hanging on live overhead railway lines.

The man had been electrocuted while allegedly trying to steal railway line cables, which are sold for their copper.

It's not known when he died but residents discovered the body on Wednesday morning and called the police.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Kay Makhubele said officers rushed to the scene but when they got there he was already dead.

"We have opened an inquest docket into what happened. We don't know who he is, where he's from and whether he was alone. We're busy trying to establish that," he said

Metrorail stations in South Africa have been deserted following the government's announcement that most commuter rail services would not be operating, in adherence with the lockdown regulations, and Joburg criminals have seemingly been taking advantage by stealing cables at some stations.

Last month some suburbs in the south of Joburg were left without power when a man was electrocuted while trying to climb an electricity tower.

That resulted in four substations losing power.

It's not known why the man climbed the 88KV electricity tower, but it's suspected that he might have wanted to vandalise it.

I do. But I'm concerned that alcohol and tobacco related health issues are gonna use up the beds that should be catering for corona patients in hospitals. Already we don't have enough.

Trauma units are often flooded with alcohol related injuries over the weekends especially - fighting, car accidents, domestic violence.

We could have done without alcohol til next year dude when we done with corona

People will just have to be responsible.I really don't see the problem with reinstating alcohol because people are gonna be drinking from home anyway.It should not have been banned in the first place.We don't want our citizens to be killed by depression before Covid even get to them.

They are involved in many of these activities but we know the papers won't mention nationality out of fear of sparking xenophobic attacks.

We shouldn't celebrate death in any event,no matter who died,but I wish our government could remove these people from South Africa.

Lol . Easier said than done dude. People have been caught drunk-driving even during the lockdown, so drinking at home is not the solution. We have a serious drinking problem.

But we'll see how it goes. I don't trust people to be responsible, unfortunately.

I do check his account. He's been launching his manifesto there. He's too focused on foreigners though, but he knows its his selling point.
