AfDB's 10 biggest shareholders:

Nigeria: 9.1%; US: 6.5%; Egypt: 5.5%; Japan:5.4%;

South Africa: 4.9% Algeria: 4.1%; Germany: 4%;

Canada: 3.8%; Ivory Coast: 3.7%; France: 3.6% (Source BBC)

In the age of politics, national interests and selfish foreign policy Nigeria needs to stand her grounds and protect her national interest (not necessarily at the expense of the continent but against foreign meddling).

I am pretty sure this sudden interest of the Americans with who heads the bank is not unconnected with her "cold war" with China, China is doing more business in Africa while America is busy setting up military bases across the continent - they have suddenly realized the fallacy of their approach. And if trump's foreign policy antecedents are anything to go by then America first is his slogan. Beside Africa has no business taking sides in this conflict all we need to do is look at which partnership has benefited the continent in terms of developing the continent's critical infrastructure the Americans or the Chinese? Then let's also pursue our selfish national interests and foreign policy and stay away from taking sides.

So do you mean that Nigeria is a big shareholder...

what do you mean

I would also observe that the best will be for Africa to look inward for her development. The way our leaders run the continent exposes her to foreign influence and I dare to say that over 75% of the economic policies and programmes of the Nations in Africa are influenced by external forces to wit, lenders/donors.

No. but let's engage everyone based on the merits of our own interests.

Shareholders status doesn't shield anyone from accountability though.

China just like America is already our ally so the question you asked is irrelevant. If China and America are engaging each other in cold or trade war, we have no business taking sides with any of them. During the height of the Cold War between USA and USSR, Nigeria joined the non-aligned movement.

What is important for us is to pursue our national interest and pan African interest. Keeping Adesina as head of the AfDB for the next five years is strategic to Nigeria’s developmental interest and we must resist every attempt by the US to sacrifice Adesina in its war with China and in its bid to exert more control over the continent.

I agree with you. This makes us vulnerable as target during cold war. Nigeria cannot afford not to take side. it is either we align with America and makes China only trading partner if America interests are not threatened or align with China and makes US only trading partner if China does not feel threatened.
Adesina is a just a victim of international politics.
I feel China is recolonising Africa economically and being part of commonwealth , we cannot do without Anglo-American power block.
You need a very serious and disciplined President like fiedel Castro to stand with US bullshit. I do not see any leader who can do that.
Most African leaders are brazenly corrupt and they will loose their looted funds if they dare US.
Re: Afdb 10 Biggest Shareholders And The Political-economics Of National Interest by Saifulah(op): 10:53am On May 30, 2020
@joyandfaith I dont think I agree with you on aligning with the Anglo-American power block, and I am for using this opportunity to recalibrating our Sino-Africa trade relationship. Most of the bright development spots on the continent are countries that have gotten their China partnership right - Kenya, Ethiopia, Rwanda, South Africa etc. and China is their biggest trade partner.

Beside I find it hard to identify any concrete socially impactful FDI from the west.

If Adesina was from SS/SE region.. The story and tones from the SW region would have been different..

You would hear statements like

"Allow him to defend himself"
"SS/SE like defending their sons unlike we in the SW"
"Anyone that has worked with GEJ we aren't supprised"
"Nobody should interfere with US probe"

Now because their son is involved...

I agree with you. Some Nigerians have a way of trivializing issues. But this is nor one of those and should not be one of those. Besides I am not from the SW.
