TODAY IN HISTORY

1967 May 30: Lt. Col. Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu the Military Governor of Eastern Nigeria declared the Republic of Biafra and pronounced himself Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of the Republic.

What Lessons have you we learnt from that?

The short form of the story is that there was a coup. Northerners quickly branded the coup an 'Igbo coup' and staged their own coup and made Gowon head of state. It did not end there. They went about killing thousands of Igbo civilians who never knew anything about the first coup. Over 30,000 Igbos, men, women and children were murdered all Over Nigeria, mainly in the North. Many Igbos approached Ojukwu, who was then Military Governor of the Eastern Region, and asked him to pull the East out Nigeria since Igbos were no longer safe in Nigeria. Ojukwu rejected the idea and told Igbos that he would meet Gowon and negotiate a settlement that would make Igbos feel safe in Nigeria

Because Igbos were been murdered everywhere, Ojukwu could only meet Gowon outside Nigeria, in Aburi Ghana, where both men reached an agreement which they both signed. When they returned to Nigeria, Gowon refused to honour the agreement they signed in Ghana. Ojukwu was left with no choice than to follow the wishes of his people. He pulled the Eastern Region out of Nigeria by declaring it the Republic of Biafra.

Gowon retaliated by declaring war. Civil war followed that lasted 3 years and left millions dead. Gowon caused the war by not honouring the agreement he signed in Ghana
