Skills A Mechanical Engineer Should Learn To Be Relevant by Himtoisand(op): 12:03am On Jun 03, 2020
I am an undergraduate student in one of the Universities of Technology. I am studying mechanical engineering. A 4.50 - 5.0 CGPA student, but i dont know how a mechanical system like a car operates. My school curriculum is obsolete. I love to learn but i am confused on how to develop myself. CAD today, Programming tomorrow, cloud computing next week. I dont want to be confuse in life and end up like my father. Who studied in one of the best universities in europe but we are based in one of the poorest region in Nigeria and he has no job for the past 10 years due to poor preparation and planning. Please help me on how can i develop myself to be a great mechanical engineer?.

Find a very good workshop learn the practical aspect of it. you can specialise in AC or Vehicle maintenance to equip yourself for the market and with your gp I believe getting a job will not be an issue for you if you can defend it.
with your CAD experience and the rest think of how you can become an entrepreneur in mechanical technology by trying to establish yourself.
don't let white collar job deceive you, you can be your own boss and register a company what you need to do is to be good at what you do. the type of services you deliver will speak for you irrespective of your charges.

You can identify your father's fault. He depended too much on paper certificate. The world is changing, gone are the days where you focus only on certificates for means of livelihood. Skills is what you need, and not just one skill. You've to differentiate yourself by becoming an expert in whatever you do. That's what will make you stand out among your peers. As a mechanical engineering students focus more on design skills. There is great need for new machines in agricultural field, homes etc which most Nigerians are not able to solved. Machines are becoming more intelligent, so you need to be good in programming to add this feature. So think in general, IoT, etc. Autonomous machines need programs to work ,so python, c language etc are prerequisite. All what mentioned here are hardly taught well in most Nigerian Universities and that's why we've so many half baked engineering graduates who can't solve real life problems. There are so many online courses you can take to help develop these skills.
