Pls my family,I really need all d help i can get.My sister's husband had accident 1 week ago and had spinal compression. We were told d surgery wud be 50/50 and that some people have recovered and walked after d surgery. We agreed to d surgery and 2 days after d surgery,we have been asked to buy wheel chair. So,i went to physio dept to see if we can hire wheelchair instead of buying since d doctor said he cud still walk.To my greatest shock,d lady in d physio asked who my patient was,i told her and she told me that my in law cud not walk again that his tests came A or sth,dat his prognosis is bad.She went ahead to advise me to seek for help from well meaning individuals to foot some Bills cos we can't do it on our own.According to her,my in law was supposed to be in d ICU for 72hrs at least but because we didn't have d money,he was allowed for just 24hrs which cost 100k per night there. As at this moment,we have spent more than 1.5 million in just one week,as we are here in d hospital,1 night cost 5k,we have to buy orthopedic bed,Pampers, cathether, wheelchair, money cos we will hire car anyday we are coming for his physio. I'm really not sure of wat help to ask, where to ask,wat shud we expect after his discharge, who is going to help us. My sister is not doing anything at d moment, she has a 6 months baby at hand and older kids are 5 n 3.The husband is just 40 All these responsibilities are too much for her and to my family too. We are still at Fed medical center Jabi Pls,i need advice, help, suggestions |

I am a 14yrs survivor (paraplegic) and in all sincerity, spinal cord injury does not have any surgery, no drugs except physio. All that is required is proper management to avoid bedsores and incure expenses. I am ready to guide and advise making use of 14yrs+ on wheels. Spinal cord injury can ruin the family at the beginning and if handled properly, the patient can start a new life. So, am not doubting your expenses. You just have to accept fate, prepare for the journey ahead especially for the wife and seee what the man can do. However, before I can advise further What's the level of injury? What do you need exactly? |

I shed a tear. People who are healthy, and able to move around freely without let or hindrance do take this rare gift and privilege for granted. When you go to hospitals, you'd see life and the gift of sound health as truly a gift to love and to cherish all the time. |

Sorry.. This is why I am always super careful when driving, riding on okadas, or even entering interstate cars. People claim I'm too careful and I try to impose it on others especially my family members. The world is already is already too chaotic, we can never be too careful but disregarding the principle of carefulness increases the risks and dangers we face daily. Your brother's case will take sometime to heal. Go on Youtube and watch videos on how paralysed people healed themselves with yoga, meditation etc. Learn more about his situation. There is always a chance of recovery no matter how slim. |

So so sorry for the situation. All hop is not lost. That physiotherapist didnt see the MRI image, neither does she know the answers to some questions and as such getting advice frm him/her may b depressing Wat was the level of the spinal cord injury?? Was it complete, incomplete, or a compression?? The answers 2 these questions are crucial to wat the outcome would be like. |

reasonwitme:Please, ask questions from the Dr. I can't diagnose the level with your response. The level is essential to advise accordingly. If you're with him.. Tell him to look away, use a comb or paper to scratch is body from the toe. Tell him to answer yes when he feels any form of sensitization that is, if he feels you are doing anything. By looking away, he won't see you. That's another way of diagnosing but it still can't be perfect. Just asking you to this to avoid being misdiagnosed. However, the best is to ask the Doctor in charge the level of injury and whether it is complete or not. But with that picture, seems it's complete. Ask questions ma'am. That's the only way you can get enough information. There is a whatsapp group he can be added to seek more information and advice. Let's do it like this, they must have a social worker or meet the physio to ask him questions I want to know the following What's the level of the injury.? Is it complete or incomplete? What sort of exercise can he do to regain firmness of his hand.? Is there any surgery that can correct the present situation? If yes, what sort of surgery and where? Here or Abroad.? Ask him what can he do and not do? If they discharge him, expenses would be involved. Buying of Cartheter, gloves, syringe, urine bag, etc. Let them tutor the wife on how to change Cartheter rather than waiting for nurses and reduce expenses. Ask about after care and challenges ahead. |

reasonwitme:Ma'am, calm down. Don't break down. It will affect the wife and things would continue to get more complicated. Relax. I survived it for 14yrs and still counting. I went to school, completed my UG and PG. Presently working and married last year. It will be fine as time goes on. It's just for you to accept what life has thrown to the family and follow guidelines. God on our side, he would be back doing something to put food on the table. Time heals every injury. |
