Hi Nairalanders,

I just got my first car, 2009 Honda Accord Naija used. Engine, transmission, and AC all in perfect condition. Though the shock for the trunk and bonnet need attention as they are weak already. Also, the LCD screen needs to be replaced as the screen is just showing white.

I really love the car and I am so overjoyed. Though still using it to learn driving which I have been doing great at.

I need suggestions on how best to look after my baby. She is just so sweet.

op, congrats on your new car, when you want to service your transmission use the recommended oil honda dw1 and ask the previous owner the oil they use in servicing the car, if the oil weight is 5w30 stick with it, but if is 20w50 you can switch to a light weight oil maybe 10w40 and observe wether there is oil shortage. If the oil shorts, use 20w50 if not you can switch to 5w30. Remember to buy oem when replacing parts. And i hope the fan is not bypass and thermostat removed.

Pls are u saying the fan shouldn't be a bypass? And also should or should dey it remove the Thermostart? I just got a naija used Crv 2007 and it did over heat that same day while going home.. So a mechanic did bypass but dint know about the Thermostart removed or not.... I just want to do a new rewiring of the car maybe there were bad wires touching or maybe dirty old mechanic work from the former owner

bypassing a fan is a wrong practice, have a rewire revert your fan to factory, then you can check the cause of the overheating. A lot of things can make a car to overheat, bad water pump, thermostat stuck close, faulty radiator fan etc.

Nb: when you bypass your fan, it prevents your engine to gets to it optimum temperature there by making it to consume fuel and sludge build up.

3 months ago my radiator busted. It took me almost an hour to reject the mechanic and rewire suggestion that the thermostat is the culprit hence must be removed and fan put to direct. They insisted and insisted, gave me 100 reasons why our weather is not the same with abroad. Then countless of other cars better than mine that had gone through same dissection.
It was later discovered that both fans failed.
Thank God for lessons on Nairaland. I am still enjoying my factory fitted connections

Many thanks sir. This is very informative. How often should the transmission be serviced or how do I know when the transmission is due for service?

Don’t mind the comments above, most people are pained.

I got my own car few weeks ago and thr first thing i did was to get the washing equipment to avoid scratch due to washing on the car.
I got a car wash liquid and towel for washing
I also got steering cover and car cover to avoid heat damaging the paint

I finally got new sets of sexy car mat

I got extinguisher, C caution and those basic things

I also got a pink coolant for the car to avoid using ordinary water for the radiator
Owning a car is sweet

Google for your car manual,,that’s the best and follow the maintenance culture advice and care or order the Manual from amazon

It is simply because higher mileage engines have weak seams and will overheat easily. So it is suggested to keep fan running to maintain cooler temps. In the same vein, the fans are old and thermostat on/off system actually burn them out faster than constant running because of current draw.
My practical observations from years of driving.
