I think the modern benin kingdom should include just Edo state (minus other ethnic groups areas). I don't want them to start saying we are land grabbers. Language The main language is Edo. Which contains Benins, Esan,Afemai,Owan, etsako, etc. Area It has an area of 17,500 sq2 and a population of just over 3 million. The modern Benin kingdom will have $11.89 billion as GDP and a GDP per capital of just 4,000. |

Well Benin Kingdom when it comes should not include non-Benin majority areas. Unless Esan, Afemai and others agree in a referendum to join. Many Esan claim independence from Benin since about 1480s. Around when Prince Iginuwa left Benin to form what is now Warri Kingdom. If true, it means Esan left Benin just as the name Edo was introduced. Meaning they left basically as Benin not as Edo. Which makes the name of current state that includes them a fallacy due to poor knowledge of history. What is most important is harmony, not size or population. |

AreaFada2:so it should just include just Edo south?? |
Re: The Modern Benin Kingdom by AreaFada2: 7:59am On Jun 15, 2020 |
Binikingdowm:Yes, unless Edo Central and North legally and democratically agree to be part of it. Too many things happened by colonial or military fiat in Nigeria. And the result has been very damaging. |

AreaFada2:what about ignanke? Igbos claim them. Gelegele? Ijaws claim them. And some Yoruba communities in ovia |
Re: The Modern Benin Kingdom by AreaFada2: 8:04am On Jun 15, 2020 |
Binikingdowm:Everyone within Edo South legal entities remain in situ. Simple. In Ovia, Yoruboid Edo are part of the Benin nation. No agitation there. The opportunity to migrate and join whoever anyone deem to be their kin anywhere else in Nigeria or successor nations is open. 2 Likes |

AreaFada2: No i believe edo as a whole would make a great country i have stayed both in edo central and edo north they regard we benins as thier ancestral home, benin empire didnt archive greatness without them, those areas was were the oba drew his foot soldiers from, in the acient times we allowed them to have thier own autonomy And thier people had a say in the governance of the ancient Kingdom..... So there was no room for injustice Edos are one we should be bothered about other Edoid tribes outside the shores of edo state like urhobo and co |
Re: The Modern Benin Kingdom by AreaFada2: 8:56am On Jun 15, 2020 |
gregyboy:I understand your position. But there is an undercurrent of people feeling Benin is dominating them. It led to the state being called Edo. It should have been Benin. Because Edo was only central part of Benin City. Bendel came from Benin and Delta Provinces. Benin became Edo but Delta remains Delta. It was to remove the impression that Oba is ruler over the whole state. It would imply that if called Benin State. What people say about how they are related to Benin is irrelevant. Action matters most. Have you as Benin met a non Benin but Edo person who is a policeman or govt official in govt offices anywhere in Nigeria? 30 years back before state creation I heard Edo Central people boasting they will rather help an Hausa than assist a Benin person. The Benins are very naive regarding this relationship. Others are ready to scheme us out of anything. But Benins have this attitude of their our people and act so. Others say so but act very differently. The sooner Benins smell the coffee the better. Go check Edo Central forums online. Because they are largely anonymous they are venting their bile against Benin. They are even saying Benin are invaders from Yoruba land. That they own all of Edo originally. I just wonder if they had 67% of Edo population like Benin has. Benin would be totally made redundant. Do not let experience in university towns that are very diverse deceive you. We cannot afford enemies within and fifth columnists. Their ancestors knew their allegiance. Today allegiance is fluid and determined by where people stand to gain more from. |

AreaFada2: I know all this too i stayed in edo north to be truthful the edo north mostly identify with the yoruba than edo tribe most of thier people are based in lagos and thier children speak Yoruba they bear names like ogedegbe the Ijesha warrior who raided them in the time past.... They even see Binis as Yoruba too, just know the passion how they love yorubas i believe a portion of thier population were yorubas who got assimilated through time, But you see the edo central the esan people jeez those people will go extra mile to claim benin, if they see a benin man they are so happy they will give that benin person his accorded rights The esan and estako people they dont agree culturally and politically, they would rather let benins rule than allow any of them govern The current political struggle between obaseki and oshiomole is not felt in benin but between the estako and esan people At the end of the day they have no choice than to Be under a country called edo 1 Like |

Emilokoiyawon: Apart from your Fulani overlords in Ilorin, your Muslim brothers including Tinubu and you muslim Obas are under the Sultan of Sokoto. You can't commence your Muslim festivals without the Sultan of Sokoto who is your supreme leader giving the go ahead, so the Yoruba are under the North spiritually and politically. |

gregyboy: All these your rantings are irrelevant. We agree Bini/Edo is an inconsequential village. We agree it has a shadow (however tiny). You are yet to show us the STRONG. Where is the village strong? Bini/Edo is a tiny, impotent village that can never be a country. Stop disgracing yasef. Kee yasef and have peace of mind. 4 Likes |
