I started farming maize from last year and harvested it but it was poor. This year again i started as usual but it seams it going to be like last year. So these are my mistake and please agro tech i need your help and advice.. Starting. 1. I made my ridges. 2.i planted 4 to 5 seedling each. 3.i could not even space them well 4.it is 3weeks old and i apply fertilizer 5.after ridging,i apply herbicile(we call it 2weeks) 6.i just use normal seed not hybrid seed... Those are all the mistake and how can i correct them. Note:it just 5plot or so. And pls recommend an chemical i can use..

Now go and thin it down to a maximum of 2 per stand.

Just ensure that the farm is weed free.
It is difficult to even advice you with the information you gave.

What spacing did you use

What fertiliser did you apply?
Why do you think the farm will be a failure like last year

Let me tackle the points one after the other.

1. I made my ridges. - This should not be a problem actually. However, it's almost like waste of time as maize/corn will also grow well without ridges, just make sure you plough your land well

2.i planted 4 to 5 seedling each. - I think this is the greatest mistake and surely this is where the main problem comes from. 1 seed is okay and at most, it should not be more than seeds per hole. {This is our own practice in our farm)

3.i could not even space them well - This is problem number 2. You need to space them enough especially when you know you've planted like 4 to 5 seeds at once.

4.it is 3weeks old and i apply fertilizer - Applying fertilizer is not a bag idea but how did you know the amount to apply. How did know the measurement of each of the NPK to combine and did you do the soil test as to determine the best formulation that will suite your land.

5.after ridging,i apply herbicile(we call it 2weeks) - Which one did you use? Is it Atrazine, Gramazone, Sticker, Nwura Wura or 24D?

6.i just use normal seed not hybrid seed - Hybrid is highly recommended. I think the best for now is Premier hybrid seeds {you can go for Oba 4 or 6 and its just N750 per 2kg) If this will be too much for you, you can buy the normal treated seeds which cannot be more than N550 but dont just plant the normal seed.

I think you can work on these things and try to aquire more knowledge. See you succeeding

The chemical i use is called glyspring made by springfield I don know how i can apply fertilizer and don know the soil texture. Pls can maize be transmitted..

One of the possible solutions to mitigate the error is to remove or transplant some of the seeds that germinated out the 5 per hole especially the weak once.
