Jurgen Klopp promised that his team would not lose focus after wrapping up the Premier League title, but that was always going to be easier said than done. Liverpool’s first encounter since being crowned champions of English soccer for the first time since 1990 saw it demolished 4-0 by a Manchester City side that had just relinquished the crown.

Liverpool did return to winning ways on Sunday, overcoming Aston Villa 2-0 at Anfield. It was far from a classic performance from the Reds, however, and they had to wait until the 71st minute to break the deadlock through Sadio Mane. There has been a clear dip in the team’s performance since it got over the line; that is inevitable to some extent, but Liverpool still has something to play for this season.

That something, alas, is not the FA Cup or the Champions League, with Klopp’s side having already suffered elimination from both competitions. But four wins from its final five matches would see Liverpool break Manchester City’s 100-points tally from 2017/18 and set a new record in the history of the English top flight. Such feats may not have bothered Klopp and co. earlier in the season, but now that the trophy is guaranteed there will be a collective desire to become – by one measure at least – the greatest team of all time.

Brighton, for its part, has all but realized its primary objective for the campaign: avoiding relegation. Nine points clear of the drop zone, Graham Potter’s side will almost certainly be participating in the Premier League in 2020/21.

As far as I am concerned we are done with this season.
