Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has reacted to the bill on sexual harassment and rape passed by the Senate few days ago saying that it is discriminatory and targeted at male lecturers.

Speaking at a Town Hall meeting with critical stakeholders in Jos on Monday, July 13, the National President of ASUU Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi said the bill which is yet to be signed into law might make male lecturers say they don’t want to teach female students.

The bill says that touching the hair of a student is sexual harassment. The bill also says that winking at a student is sexual harassment. The bills say even if the student consent, it is still sexual harassment. The bill says it is not necessary to prove the intention of the accused before persecution. The bill says you don't have to be a victim to make a report, you may just be an observer. If a lecturer has done any of the mentioned, it is 5yrs imprisonment without fine. If it is established that a student made a false report, the bill says the highest consequence is suspension of the student. 'Suspension not expulsion'.
