Schürrle did fine in his first season it was Salmonella that detailed him during the second one, as for Gnabry he was an upcoming player who wasn't trusted by his managers hence his poor form during his EPL days. This isn't a fair assessment, Thomas Hitzspelger played well, Klinsmann and Ballack too. Even Emre Can was playing well before he moved to Juventus

Getting them on the cheap is not the main problem. The main problem is paying their wages. Unless the Arab takeover is complete, Newcastle will run itself deep into debt if they try it. Imagine the jump from paying peanuts weekly to 350k weekly.

If we could win championship with ageing cahill, Luiz, and azpi as CB, we could win anything with them. Chris, Zouma, and Rudiger's bests are as good as the above mentioned.

Lampard should look for a way to get his defenders to return to their best forms and also a system that will help his players. If they need a defenders coach, he should get it.

We should stick with the good ones we have than going to look for what we think is good outside.

Kepas current asset value is £50m. To sell him for less would result in an accounting loss toward FFP.

I can see a structure where we value Kepa at £50m and add another £70m to make up Oblaks £120m clause.

We then offer Oblak a 6 year contract so his yearly amortisation excluding wages becomes £20m (£120m divided by 6 years). This is no different to buying an £80m player on a 4 year contract.

At the same time, we get rid of Kepas contract from the books. We are then replacing Kepas £10m per year amortisation (£72m fee over 7 years) with Oblak £20m per year amortisation. In accounting terms the yearly difference is only £10m per year.

On the other hand, if we buy Onana for example and can't sell Kepa, we will be adding Onana £7m per year amortisation to Kepas £10m per year making £17m per year.

So the difference between buying Oblak in a swap and buying Onana outright in addition to Kepa could be only £3m per year in accounting terms.

In Atletico Madrid eyes, I can't see why getting £70m free cash plus a younger Spanish number one goalkeeper won't appeal to them. . . unless they think Kepa is totally trash. I would like to think Kepa still has small attraction in Spain given he is their NT goalkeeper.

Kepa alone won't break FFP rules but since we are planning other expenditure like Havertz et al, every little helps. Marina has this mode of operating of never making accounting loss on a player. If you bid for less than a players carrying value, she will never sell even if the player is useless, she would rather loan the player out indefinitely until his contract expires.

For me, nothing is wrong with all our CB.
If I have a say, I will tell the club not to sell any of them. They are not the best in the world, but they are enough to win a team the championship. We have all seen their best and worst days. And we have all seen them sustain a level of consistency. The grass is always greener on the other side until you get closer. Let us stick with what we have in terms of CB while the manager works on getting them to the levels they used to be at. {Although, we don't even have say).


The only major issue I have with Kepa is his physical disadvantage and his Laziness. While he can work on his laziness and improve, it is impossible to work on his stature. Because of that, it will be right for the club to sell him if there is any club willing to buy.

In terms of his replacement, the club can go to the championship, bundesliga, etc and get any goalkeeper with height, agility, good footwork to replace him.

If I were to own a club, the goalkeeping department will be less of a concern for me. I will always go for unproven cheap ones.
