THE STORY OF A NIGERIAN MANUFACTURER

I run a manufacturing business and a trading business.
The biggest challenge in my manufacturing business is not power, or infrastructure, the biggest challenge is getting honest staff. Everyone we hire is appears to be on a mission to steal as much as possible. Inflated invoices, recording less than the actual number of units produced. The worst part of it all is that all the fraud we've uncovered is not done by a single person, it's usually many staff who collude with each other, from production, to sales, to finance, even top management. There was a year I overhauled management 3 times in a year. But I've found a solution sha, I now use Indian management. So competent, so honest and so straightforward. I thought they were expensive at first with all the visa fees, accommodation, house staff, but now that losses due to staff theft have been reduced to a minimum, and efficiency increased, the Indian management has turned out to be cheaper than the previous Nigerian management. Now, all sensitive positions involving money go to Indians. Nigerians are only allowed in non-sensitive positions. I used to criticize companies like Dangote Group that hire so many Indians when there are many unemployed Nigerians, but now, I understand their decision.

My biggest challenge in the trading business is the same, getting honest staff. The form of trading occurs in the open market, and involves staff having access to huge sums of money running into a few millions. I know how much I pay to security companies to provide escorts for the staff, not to prevent robbery, but to ensure that the staff go straight to the bank to deposit the money after the day's sales and not disappear with my money. This money spent on security companies is even enough to be declared as profit. We have to spend on CCTV, biometric scanners and other things that wouldn't not be needed if staff weren't looking for the slightest opportunity to steal.

It got so bad at a point that my main criteria for employing staff was no longer competency but honesty. At least, competency and skills can be learnt, but once you're dishonest, you're dishonest.

We always complain of the economy and how they are no jobs. I know people abroad who would have loved to set up job creating businesses in Nigeria but they can't because they can't get any trustworthy person to run it.

I know people in Nigeria with so much money, they want to start factories and other job-creating businesses but they can't because they are occupied elsewhere and can't get any trustworthy person to run the business. So instead of investing in the real sector and creating jobs, they'll just buy treasury bills, while the thieves are shouting no jobs.

Many big businesses would have been born in Nigeria if we could engage in partnerships, but we cant because you can't trust anyone. This is one advantage the Indians and Lebanese have over us in Nigeria. They can pull resources together and do mega-business, unlike Nigerians that because only one person must do everything since we can't partner, end up with small, tiny businesses.

Start a poultry and they will be stealing your eggs. Some will even go
ahead to be killing the chickens so that they'll be allowed to take them home.

Start an entertainment/viewing/game center and they'll be pocketing
your money. On the days you're around at the business, the money
realized will be x10 of the money realized when you're not around.
Because they're eating your money.

Lease out a vehicle to a driver to use and watch as he'll finish you.

Start a restaurant, the same thing will happen. More than half of the
total food ingredients will end up in their personal kitchens.

Even ordinary provisions shop, they will find a way to steal.

You'll see them with that their evil, wicked saying "na where person dey work, na there e dey chop, na e make dem dey callam workchop/workshop"...... Just imagine, justifying theft at work.

And you'll see these people point their crooked fingers at politicians when they're not any different. I usually say the reason most Nigerians haven't stolen billions of government money, is simply lack of opportunity.

Nigerians are the problem of Nigeria.

You are 100% right, Nigeria is a terrible place however, Nigerian CEOs are not any good either. They use people like rag and expect them not to find way to survive. You will see an honest person working hard but bc he is not complaining, the Md or CEO would think he is stealing, thats why he is not complaining and will refuse to raise his pay.

The combo that works is white ceo with Nigerian workers or Black ceo with white workers.

Ask any Nigerian now, he will tell you he prefer to work for a white man.

The fault is from the foundation.. The country is built on lies and due to evolution, everybody turned to criminal.

Don't be fast in judging.

Most of the staff are usually in on it..

You'd be shocked that people from different departments who shouldn't even know each other are joining forces to defraud the company.

Nigerians are criminals...

If you've ran a business or know someone who has, you'd know...

In a hotel, people would lodge, it won't be recorded and everyone keeps quiet..

Barman will sell his own drinks while yours would be there for a long time.

Chef would sell their own food made with your ingredients and still steal some.

In my earlier post, I mentioned an hotel, in this same hotel, we caught the chef using local rice to make fried rice and selling to guests!!

You will be checking records which would be clean. Record says 50bottles of Hennessy, you check and it's actually complete but you begin to wonder why there hasn't been a single sales for a week not knowing that the barman has been privately buying Hennessy in Wholesale price and selling them in your hotel...

He might buy a bottle of Hennessy For 10k wholesale price and resell for 25k hotel price.

The chef does the same thing.

They won't factor in the loans you took, the taxes you pay, utility bills, service bills, salaries, paying police etc

Fear Nigerians.

I agree with you, and thats one of the campaigns I make. Nigerians refer to THEFT as SMARTNESS, and exactly why our politicians are corrupt, because to them its not corruption but a smart move, and since they are product of the society, they steal when they get into offices.

And thats also why lots of Nigerians are into yahoo, this problem is a very deep psychological problem and as a patriotic African/Nigerian, I believe we should help these people because its nothing but mental sickness that actually draw them backward at the end of the day.

Yes, our culture is good, but there are things we need to wash off in our culture. Part of them is legit stealing

Stealing is not part of our culture. Stealing came as a result of industrialization.

I could regale you with stories relative to how dishonest the average Nigerian is when it comes to business or the workplace.

Given the nature of my business, entrepreneurs, companies and individuals come calling for financial succour and of course I engage them on how they're managing their businesses and finances. I can tell the focused ones from the confused and amongst the focused, over 80% of the time, they got to where they are now due to bad management ocassioned majorly by theft and organisational corruption. So, they're looking for a bail out to start clean.

It is a pandemic that, like someone rightly mentioned, technology happen to be the vaccine. This, and a no nonsense management structure never minding the size of the business is the key to nipping this scourge in the bud.

[s]The irony of it all is these thieves are SO religious![/s]

This is unnecessary. People are bad, religious or not.

There is a man in our church who uses crutches because one of his legs is completely damaged. What happened? He had gone to deposit the church's money in the bank and got attacked. The robbers riddled his leg with bullets.

I don't know what you mean by so religious, but a bad person is bad, irrespective of his beliefs. They might even use religion to cover up their misdeeds.

You're absolutely right. Hotel is one of the places you find the most dishonest people and manufacturing companies.

If one hire a good account officer and cost control, it will stop. The drinks need to be stamped from the store as soon as they're brought in and signed by the issuing officer. The foods same also. With that you will definitely checkmate fraud. Another way they steal badly is by having their own POS secretly. The F&B manager need to be promoted from one of the most trustworthy in staffs and salary increased. If you the person didn't do it with others, he can never do it when trusted.

I had a south Africa manager then...he watches the whole staff and sack managers, replace them with trusted and proven staffs...I got promoted twice through that means and it was all hell let loose...I held God so tight and the problem and complain abt my rigidness was so much...so one day, he asked me why is everyone complaining abt me, I said I don't know...he now told me that with all that complain, he now believes and knows I'm doing my job ...he promoted me that same day and my life has been a blessing cos I choose to make a difference.

I can be consulted on how to avoid fraud both in room booking, store and F&B kitchen.

Thanks

If he's in accounts, then he can't be making such money cos front office does the booking and relate with the income auditor. Possible place is Restaurant, Bar and Front office

He can. Some times guests will do hankypanky with the staff if their company pays for their food and drinks during their stay. The customer will talk with the accts dept or whi h ever departments are involved to charge the food and accommodation while the customer will (a) not stay at the hotel at all or (b) stay but not eat
Now, the staff of the hotel will send the bill to the customers sponsor who will clear the bill as agreed. When they pay, the hot staff will withdraw and call the customer and they split the cash as agreed. So if you have say 5 clients doing that per day and you get only #2k from each of them you can giess howmuch that would be. Other times, it's those short time ru s people that just use the room for 1hr and leave but the receptionist will tell them they have to pay full amount that they don't accept half day or per hr payment. Now, this customer will pay in full, go do his short time business and leave within one or two hrs. When he leaves, the staff on duty will just sneaking to rearrange the room and act as if no one has booked it since. Know cos I used to work in hotels.

You are a thief.... This is why most multinationals do not hire Nigerians....

You have your salary + 2k daily but you still chose to steal from the owner of the store.......

I pray wherever you are, what ever you lay your hands on, whatever you are doing in the store should be done to you x10.

Criminal....

Accident kill you.. Praying after stealing... Nigerians!!!!

Runs might be technical stealing like doing side business with some of your company's clients or people they introduce to you not stealing stealing.
