A Ugandan man, Felix Byamukama, has been sentenced to 11 years imprisonment for killing mountain gorillas best known as Rafiki.

Byamukama was jailed for illegally entering a conservation park and killing a gorilla. According to the Uganda Wildlife Authority, Byamukama said he had to kill the gorilla in self defense when it charged towards him in a violent manner.

With just over 1000 still in existence, the rare silverback mountain gorilla is one of the two subspecies of the eastern gorilla and is considered an endangered specie by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

According to report, Rafiki was killed by a sharp that penetrated his internal organs. It went missing on 1 June, the dead body was discovered by a search team the next day.

Byamukama will serve several sentences concurrently, leading to 11 years in jail which falls far short of the life sentence it was predicted he could have been given.

You entered a conservation park illegally and killed a gorilla, and you trying to justify your murder by saying it's safe defense... wtf

But is the sentence not too extreme and harsh?... what do I know sef...

Animal right activist, nairaland chapter will masturbate on this thread

I still don't know why some species like these gorillas are going on extinct. Are there no females in their troops for reproduction or are their males not capable of impregnating them?... I guess their mortality rate supercedes their natality rate

Funny enough, these gorillas don't know that they are going on extinct. If not they would have taken matters into their hands

Do we even have such laws in Nigeria to rare species as the one on this post? If we do, do we implement them? Is good to hunt but for endangered species? The answer should be NO!

Dont subscribe to this whiteman's scrappy endeavour, we cannot stop it, some animals must go extinct. Its just like trying to prevent Dinosaurs from extinction, not all animals are meant to be here forever. Ask yourself why goats, cows, sheep, chicken, turkey and other animals that Man kill and eat everyday for thousands of years have not gone extinct. Like the apes, its just a matter of time, gorrilas and other apes will become extinct. As the ecosystem evolves, extinction is inevitable for certain species that no longer add value to the system.

Africans have finally started recieving sense, i hope it reaches our turn soon. Those who say the purnishment is too harsh, all of u are mad. What shall it profit a man to kill a rare breed of gorilla?

Razzness or rascal or whatever you are called, argue sensibly and state how many species of animals have been successfully reinstated from extinction, its only a matter of time and they surely be gone. In line with natural selection, their inability to procreate / reproduce effictively enough to maintain their existence is already an indication that they are no longer supported by nature and man cannot enforce their existence. Also argue with the reason why animals that are directly useful to humans for nutrition and other applications never go extinct. What are the direct efforts for the preservation of chicken, goats, etc from extinction. Note that species are preserved based on their value to man and the ecosystem and any species that become worthless to the ecosystem and mankind will slide to extinction. Life is about resource and value addition, the ecosystem cannot utilize its scarce resource to preserve any organism that does not return value, existence is about value addition. Natural selection will favour those species and animals that are useful and have the traits that enable them to best survive.

Natural selection chose the human race and homosapiens over the apelike homoerectus and the homoerectus had to become extinct, imagine homosapiens attempting to preserve homoerectus - that will be a futile effort because it is their time to go. There's nothing that could have been done for the Dinosaurs to be preserved because it was their time to go. Even in the human race, natural selection favors some humans over others and there is nothing you can do about that. No matter what you do, life and nature has placed the average European on a favorable pedesatal above you sub-saharan African. The energies and forces of nature react to a futuristic objective and we are products and victims of nature and that furturistic objective hence the earlier we realize and respect mother nature, the better for us humans.

The gorilla is not becoming rare because its being killed but instead it is becoming rare based on reasons ranging from its inability to effictively reproduce in large quantities to encroachment and depletion of its natural habitat by the same humans that pretend to love and want to preserve it. Do you know how many aquatic and terrestrial species have become extinct in the development of a city like lagos? Do you know how many habitats have been distorted by such developments globally, can you also estimate the number of habitats that have been destroyed by man's onshore and offshore exploration, mining and development activities? These are the real causes of species extinction but will you prefer the existence of a gorilla to the mining of crude oil? Will you prefer the existence of a gorilla to the building of a bridge, an access road, a school or a hospital for mankind? You also cannot stop a hungry man in a war torn environment from feeding on a gorilla - he needs to eat that gorilla to stay alive. Life is a competition for survival and the stronger species will survive, they will feed on the weaker ones and get stronger while the weaker species will get weaker and die off and Natural selection will favor humans in such decisions hence he gorilla is bound for extinction. Even if this man did not kill this gorilla, one day in the future there will be a need to destroy that habitat and kill the gorillas for the progress and development of humans.

Do you think its normal for someone to eat a gorilla? See posts on nairaland, where people kill and eat lizards, monkeys, rats and all sorts of abominable creatures. These are signs of chronic impoverishment and hunger, no man that has the pleasure of preparing goats, sheep, chicken etc will opt to kill and eat a gorilla but that's the human instinct for survival, you cant preach the message of endangered species to a hungry man, the basic instinct of necessity and survival is higher and most demanding.

The fool didn't just kill any random gorilla. He killed the star of the wildlife park.

From what I was made to understand, Rafiki(the dead gorilla) was easily the most popular of all the gorillas in the wildlife park. Tourists loved the creature and payed specifically to see it.

I read an article on BBC in which one of the park keepers was lamenting the impact that the gorilla's death was going to have on their business.

Now, you can see why they wanted initially wanted a life sentence for him.

His singular action of killing the gorilla has denied his country of a valuable asset and that is easily tantamount to economic sabotage.

He was even lucky that he got away with just 11 years. Serious governments don't go playing around with people who sabotage their economies.
