The lions are only doing to make the females mate again. Cuz if the cubs are Alive, the chances of the females mating with the males will be low.

I think they are doing it to preserve their own genes

They need to pass on their own gene and raise their own offspring.
The only way to achieve this is to kill the children of the former/deposed lion. Once this is done, the lioness will go into heat and accept mating with the new lion and raise kids for him
