I Met Two pretty Intelligent Guys Who Deliberately Dropped Out Of University by sacajawea: 11:17pm On Aug 15, 2020
One said it was a sheer waste of time and Money for him especially as a Nigerian. The other said after analysing everything he decided to quit but may go back later when he is Stable, in a different field.
One is Economics, the other is computer electrical Engineering, And they were both above 4.0
The first one was very brazen about it. He said he would only attend a Private Nigerian University for Connection and Business reasons or School abroad. He said he was on an almost Perfect CGPA and was deliberately failed repeatedly. The politics in the Department and faculty even amongst his Classmates, religion in school, Poor expensive Hostel life and living conditions, Crazy students behavior, the Job uncertainty etc. Made him leave. He doesn't regret it one bit.
Same goes for the 2nd one but health and Financial problems, the toxic, corrupt enviroment and Depression contributed to his. He felt he was not learning anything particularly useful.
Financially they are alright, better than most graduates actually. They are not rich or upper middle class, but they are Alright.
I did not even know they were dropouts until today.

Yh their point was that making money especially in Nigeria is not about Certificate at all. He said he was being Failed and Frustrated by the department, his colleagues were not doing anything about it, some of them were working with the lecturers. The professors were not that sound Academically and it cost so much money. Since Jobs was not guaranteed, what was the point?

My elder bro after finishing secondary school he joined NPF instead. After climbing the ranks a little he was then transferred to efcc unit. He built 3houses, 2 in lagos and one in port harcourt when he was transferred there. He married a port woman and kept her in the port house, she's working in an oil company. Then he finally decided to go to school, gained admission on his first attempt, what school won't give an efcc agent admission, he really intimidated his coursemates with his venza. Fast forward today he's a graduate who's already got everything one need from education. Now he has 2 kids.


I wish these new generation will just understand and get a skill first before going to school. That's what's trending in edo state as at now. Skill first then go to school in a big boy way. Edos ate indeed wise in their own way sha.

Where is he ?

Having a forum running and hosting it for over a decade without any improvement or additional features is not an achievement that justifies dropping out of University if your claim is true.

May be if he waited in OAU, his mind would have opened more than that.


If u can get a university education, get it.

He decided to go to school because, lack of school was affecting his growth.

U people should stop whining ur mouth saying that school is a waste of time. What of those that benefitted because they schooled. Please dont generalize. If hustle works for u, then hustle. Don't discourage those in school or has the intention of furthering because schooling is also hustling! Do what works for you and stop forcing it on others by saying going to school is a waste of time.

I believe the purpose of schooling is to make you ready when opportunity comes your way. Thanks

The Second one Made the decision because of health and Financial problems, the Environment was very toxic and according to him he was not learning really learning anything. He felt it was best to quit for now.

The main reason why many are unemployed is because they study irrelevant courses when in university

Another problem is this..many Nigerians do not create businesses, the only main reason unemployment is low in the developed world is because people create lot of businesses.

There are lot of jobs that do not need your 4 years education in the developed world except you are going for a specialised job.

I never said it is the ultimate.

I only said it will be unintelligent not to have it if u can.

A lot of organization right now, without a proper university education u are likely to be paid one third of what your mates will collect.

The reason is simple, u would be brought in as contract staff and share your money with the company that manages such professionals.

It's only in Nigeria that pieces of paper with bachelor degree holder is tantamount to intelligence, if you don't have the paper, you will be tag illiterate & there should be limit to your achievements in life.

It's only in Nigeria someone with this paper thing he/she is better than his/her counterparts who doesn't have the paper

Every website dev and SEO specialists knows that Paparazzing your website does not make it functional. If only you know how much it costs to host and maintain a big website for 10 years. Ask those who hosted and dropout after 2 years. How many forum in Nigeria and even in the world can measure up to Nairaland.

He may dropout out of school, thank God he didn't drop out the nairaland idea.

Start your own business see whether it will last 10 years

This is not an intelligent conversation. To each their own. Some went to scchool and made it, others are struggling to get even a job. Some also dropped out and doing well while some others are struggling too. These kind of thing doesn't come up in developed countries, secondary school is the expected minimum. What you do after is your choice
