I understand in that context...but weighing or quantifying it in terms of beef/battle the way he did? Nah!
How many gangster/hardcore rappers do we have in the game right now? Majority of them are talkers, Who don’t walk the talk.
I just feel j. Cole is an easy target for critics who find it easier to thrash and diss a regular guy who can really rap than the so-called gangster who can’t rap a bar to save his life.

One doesn’t have to Bleep to be considered a hard-core rapper. The hardcore rappers we had back then were perceived as “hardcore” ‘cos of the “whole east coast vs west coast” rivalry and beef, hence they had to Bleep while repping their coasts at the same time.

The issues of police brutality and racism which were prevalent back then also made some of these rappers vent and speak out against the system, hence were considered hardcore ‘cos of their aggressive rap style(N.W.A’s straight outta Compton comes to mind) Some rappers sold crack and rapped about it, cos they saw it as a way of surviving...to beat the system.

When you speak your truth as regards your life experiences and happenings in your environment that are relatable...you should be considered a hard rapper...Which is exactly what J. Cole does.
These amongst many other reasons are why I feel J.Cole would stand beside the likes of pac, ice cube, mobb deep etc if they all existed in their prime at the same time, though their albums/discography may be deeper than his.
