Yes, your idea makes some sense. If people can see that there's no more X from tribe Y to blame, it might work.

But on the other hand, the issue with corruption in Africa is that the corrupt do a lot of good in their home communities. So prosecuting them is like prosecuting the local star. Add the fact that many of the people who propose dividing Nigeria usually end up with countries that are dominated by one big tribe and many minorities , and before long the same problem happens

Then, the fact is, Africa gets money from selling raw materials, not from industries like China and Japan do. So , politicians are not necessarily incentivised to make sure things run well...

All in all, the problem with the El rufai ban was the optics of the thing. It looked too much like an antinorthern thing and too less like a principled stand for good governance.

The annoying thing about it for me was that it also looked like the NBA was applying purity tests .

Having said that, my takeaway is not that el rufai was right;the guy has not handled the security issue or the minority rights issues in his state well, but that we are so inconsistent in this country.

Like Reno focusing on the corruption in APC while keeping quiet about the corruption in PDP and vice versa for people like Femi adesina and garba shehu.

North don't even see southerners as their fellow country men. It is the south that is always doing everything possible to see the north as part of the same country. The earlier we just accept what is and do something about it the better.

Well, I am a Southerner and a Christian to boot and for the record I agree with the ban on el rufai.

What I don't agree with is the optics of the ban. The ban appeared to target elrufai based on his region, and the NBA handled the fallout badly, making them look like bigots.

Also, the NBA banned elrifal but invited wike, whose government isn't a model of good either, and Buhari as well, whose antecedents precede him.

If the NBA wanted to stand for good governance, then stand for good governance

As it is, the damage has been done. As for the Northern NBA, they are clearly overreacting and refusing to listen, even to those of their members who backed the ban on the first place.

I was just waiting for someone to say this! The poster you replied was trying so hard to act like he/she isn’t taking sides, but after a few post where he failed to answer the simple question: what is the actual justification for a threat or secession by Northern lawyers ? It jumped out as she kept blaming the NBA for being anti-north for de-inviting El Rufai. That was it for me tbh.

The fact is, it is the NBA’s prerogative to disqualify anyone (including El Rufai), especially as it is justified giving the ethnic and religious cleansing going on under his watch. Now, seeing this act purely from the point of view of an attack on Northerners is exactly the stuff of bigotry. The said poster, El Rufai and the Northern lawyers are complicit. Even if you have grievances, as members of NBA, there are internal mechanisms to address this, but as the bigots that they are (themselves, and their sponsor the Gov), they had to make it about religion and tribe. Pence was dis-invited last week in the US, heavens didn’t fall, neither did he go about sponsoring secession.

What I actually think is that the NBA should be more consistent.

I happen to agree with the ban on elrufai, and I am also aware that the ban had support across several states and religions.

The problem I have is the optics of the ban, and the fact that potential fallout was not handled well,. especially in these ultratribalist times.
