The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has issued a two-week ultimatum to the federal government to reverse the recent hike in electricity tariff and the pump price of petrol or face a nationwide strike.

According to IgbereTV reports, the decision of the Labour Congress was reached on Wednesday, September 16, in Abuja during its Central Working Committee meeting which lasted for several hours.

In a communiqué read by NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, the body said the ultimatum takes immediate effect, warning that at the end of its expiration on September 28, it would mobilize its members nationwide for civil unrest.

''The Central Working Committee has resolved to issue a two-weeks ultimatum to the Federal government to reverse its decision or face industrial action and peaceful assembly.'' Wabba said

On September 1, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) directed the various electricity distribution companies in the country to begin the implementation of the new electricity tariff regime which will see Nigerians paying more for electricity.

On Wednesday, September 2, the Federal Government through the Petroleum Pricing Marketing Company (PPMC) increased the ex-depot price of petrol from N138 to N151.56 per litre, forcing marketers to increase pump price from N148 to N162 per litre.

We, Nigerians have accepted the price regime as our fate. Nobody forced us to campaign and voted this government into power.

Strike that the government will not answer them and will threaten to pay only those going to work and every staff will be sneaking to write attendance just to receive payment at the end of the month.....

These days, Strike doesn't affect the government anymore. They should do away with the NLC and create a more functional body that will meet up with the modern regulations if laws to enforce discipline in the government.....

NLC tactical and wise approach in this unfriendly times is commendable. They must be considering the extreme hardship triggered further by the on-going pandemic invasion that is hitting harshly on the masses mostly..

Its a tough time to make quick decision for NLC. Masses are two-faced followers and chanters too, fact check.. So, buying time is wise.
